A scientific study conducted at the University of Bahrain recommended adopting a uniform definition for the concepts and objectives of the Green Building Rating System (GBRS) and developing this system in the housing sector in the Kingdom of Bahrain, to address urgent demands while maintaining sustainability.

These were some of the recommendations of a dissertation submitted by Hussam Mohammed Abdul Rahim, the student in the PhD program in Environment and Sustainable Development at the College of Science.  Abdul Rahim is the first PhD student in this program, and the first researcher in the challenges facing the application of green building systems in the Kingdom of Bahrain. He got his degree with honors.

Abdul Rahim called for raising public awareness on the benefits of following the Green Building Rating Systems (GBRS), to improve its guiding principles and accelerate the process of adopting it in the new buildings as a new way of life. The researcher noted that this can be implemented through developing and adopting a clearly defined action plan with specific objectives, so that decision makers, non-government organizations and scientific communities can adopt the same methodologies to achieve common goals.

The dissertation titled, “Potentials and Challenges of Implementing the Green Building Rating Systems (GBRS) in Bahrain: Focusing on Low-Cost Housing in the Real Estate Sector”, aimed at bridging the gap between the strategy and the implementation of the Green Building Rating Systems, providing details on the criteria of addressing the challenges facing this system and accelerating the implementation processes of (GBRS).

The dissertation sought to contribute to improving the sustainability of the real estate development sector in the Kingdom of Bahrain, through focusing on the housing sector due to its impacts on sustainability on the long-term, and the impact of all of this on energy, water, infrastructure, financing and rather community members.
