In a PhD Thesis at University of Bahrain A Study Recommends Integrating and Framing Sustainable Development Goals with Environmental Legislation

A scientific study conducted at the University of Bahrain (UoB) called on the importance of studying and analyzing environmental legislation, to constantly be aligned with the requirements and Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 and the sustainable development goals. In addition to studying the challenges that hinder the implementation of sustainability, and the best available environmental technologies that contribute to improving the environmental quality in the Kingdom.
The student researcher in the Environment and Sustainable Development PhD program at the College of Science, Abdulkareem Hassan Rashid, highly recommended including aspects of sustainable development in the process of assessing environmental impact, and studying the feasibility of adopting environmental auditing within the services of private consulting offices, taking into account the precautionary principles of environmental protection, which encourage companies to address environmental impacts as a priority in their projects.
The study,- which is the first of its kind to make a comprehensive assessment of the large industrial sector in the Kingdom of Bahrain’s role in implementing sustainable development goals related to the environment-, was conducted in order to analyze and study the efforts, initiatives and strategies of the industrial sector from the perspective of sustainability, and the role it should play in adopting and implementing sustainable development goals on the national level.
The thesis titled: “A Comprehensive Assessment of the Role of the Private Sector in the Implementation of Environment-Related Sustainable Development Goals: A Case Study of the Large Industrial Sector in Bahrain.”, aimed to comprehensively assess the of the large industrial sector in the Kingdom of Bahrain’s extent of the contribution, and its role in achieving the sustainable development goals.
The study findings showed that the industrial sector has the desire and willingness to adopt the sustainable development goals. Moreover, it referred to the importance of organizing a national road map to encourage and support the sustainable development goals in the industrial sector, to enable this sector to plan its contributions and influence the sustainable development goals.
The researcher’s examination committee consisted of: Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemistry, College of Science, UoB, Dr. Suad Ahmed Rashdan, as a supervisor, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Yusuf Ali – retired from UoB – as an assistant supervisor, the Head of the Department of Innovation and Technology Management at the Arabian Gulf University, Prof. Odeh Rashid Al- Jayyousi, as an external examiner, and Associate Professor at the Department of Life Sciences, College of Science, UoB, Dr. Hammoud Abdullah Nasser, as an internal examiner.
