The Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Bahrain (UoB), Dr. Shaikha Haifa bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, invited various companies and institutions to explore students’ ideas and projects presented in various exhibitions, describing them as useful ideas that may contribute to the development of their products and services.

The College Dean expressed her happiness with the interest shown by several companies specialized in the furniture industry in students’ ideas and projects presented at the Furniture Design course exhibition that was held recently, expressing her confidence that the visitors of student exhibitions in various colleges will always find something that strikes their attention and helps them improve their industry.

The students of the Furniture Design course (INTD 324), who are in their third year in the Bachelor of Interior Design program, presented sustainable coffee tables designed from environment friendly materials in two exhibitions: one in the courtyard of the administration building at the University’s headquarters in Sakhir, and the other in the Arts Hall.

Dr. Haifa bint Ibrahim gave her thanks to the Head of the Department of Architecture and Interior Design, Dr. Huda Mohammed Al-Madhoob, and the course instructors, Dr. Nora Nabil Al-Doy, and Dr. Tamadher Saleh Al-Fahal, for their efforts in preparing and organizing the exhibition, which was well received by the visitors.

On her part, the course instructor, Dr. Al-Fahal, explained that during this experience, the students learned to transform theoretical designs into practical projects, and got acquainted with the difficulties that arise in the implementation stage, noting that some projects produced great results, despite the use of alternative materials and relatively difficult applications.

Moreover, she stated that the students’ products caught the attention of some furniture companies that visited the exhibition and expressed their desire to invest in the students’ ideas, and they had the approval of representatives of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities as well, who also visited the exhibition.

For her part, the course student, Elaf Hassan Al-Jurdabi, confirmed that she greatly benefited from this experience, as she presented her work to specialists at the University and outside it, and shared her ideas with them, noting that she designed a sustainable chair using gypsum that includes the charging technology.

“This experience put us in front of a challenge represented in developing a design without harming the environment, provided that we apply what we have learned from the arts of design, and put our creative touches at work.” Al-Jurdabi stated.
