University of Bahrain Hosts Ophthalmologist laureate of the Isa Award for Service to Humanity

The Secretary-General of the Isa Award for Service to Humanity, Ali Abdullah Khalifa, extended his thanks and appreciation to the University of Bahrain. He conveyed the greetings of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, the Special Representative of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, may Allah protect him, to all affiliates of the University of Bahrain, in appreciation for the University’s efforts in many of the Award’s works. He also lauded the collaboration between the University of Bahrain, the Isa Award for Service to Humanity, and the Department of Cultural Research at the Royal Court.

 

The University of Bahrain hosted Dr. Sanduk Ruit, laureate of the Isa Award for Service to Humanity in its 5th session (2021-2022), on Wednesday February 22, 2023, within a dialogue session that reviewed Dr Ruit’s humanitarian initiatives and tireless efforts to find innovative creative solutions. The session was attended by the Universit y Bahrain President Dr. Jawaher bint Shaheen Al Mudhahka, vice presidents, deans, several university council members, academic and administrative bodies, and students from various colleges.

 

The President of the University of Bahrain welcomed the laureate of the Issa Award for Service to Humanity in its 5th session, noting that the University of Bahrain was honored to host the winners in the previous sessions. She stressed that this would motivate the University’s academians, administrators and students to innovate. It would also instill the values of charitable and humanitarian work in them, which would in turn help them derive more happiness.

 

Dr. Al-Mudhahka stated, “In the lecture, we felt the enthusiasm of male and female students to learn and benefit from Dr. Ruit’s experience. We are sure that some of them will follow his example in the future for the service of humanity.”

 

Dr. Sanduk Ruit extended his thanks to the Kingdom of Bahrain for hosting him. He also thanked those in charge of the Isa Award for Service to Humanity, stressing that the award will help him continue his humanitarian work and help more people.

 

The laureate shared his experience as a young doctor in Nepal, his passion and his ten-year journey to change the situation, and how he continued to work for more than thirty years and help those who are unable to finance cataract surgery.

 

Dr Ruit called on students to build efficient teams characterized with integrity, enthusiasm, and positivity, and to formulate a common vision with the members of the same team, to continue efforts, adhere to willpower, unity and focus on the goal, to stay on the right track to achieve the desired results. He stressed that these are the most important values that helped him achieve his goal in serving humanity.

 

Moderator of the dialogue, Prof. Moamen Al-Rifi, highlighted the greatness of the gift of sight, the humane message, and the importance of community solidarity and collaboration. He stressed that Arab youth is the hope of the future and urged them to follow the example of Dr. Ruit, set goals and seek to achieve them with positive work teams, continue to learn and gain experience, to contribute to the process of production and creativity for the development of the community and individuals, and to contribute to spreading the concepts of peace, humanity and giving.

 

Dr. Sanduk Ruit has developed a new method for treating cataracts, through a new lens which can be implanted inside the eyeball, and that could be produced at a much cheaper price than its counterparts, which helped him perform cataract surgery in five minutes or less. During the surgery, Dr. Ruit removes cataracts without stitches through small incisions and replaces them with a low-cost artificial lens. He was able to treat –free of charge- more than 120,000 poor patients suffering from treatable blindness.
