A scientific study conducted by two researchers at the University of Bahrain (UoB) found that male university students have better mental health than female university students, and that females surpass males in the quality of education.

The study was prepared by two faculty members in the Department of Psychology at the College of Arts at UoB, Dr. Amani Abdulrahman Al-Shirawi and Dr. Sami Mohammed Al-Mahjoob, which called for teaching the quality of life to university students, for its impact on enhancing the student’s quality of life at the social and academic levels.

The study aimed to reveal the level of gratitude and quality of life among university students in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and to identify the difference in the level of gratitude and quality of life among university students in the light of some variables such as gender, academic specialization, in addition to uncovering the correlation between the level of gratitude and quality of life among university students in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The concept of quality of life refers to the extent to which an individual feels satisfied and happy, and their ability to satisfy their needs, through the quality of the environment in which they live, and the services provided to them in the: health, social, educational, and psychological fields, with good time management and occupation.

The two researchers applied the study – which was recently published by the Egyptian Journal of Psychological Studies – on a sample of 400 university students in the Kingdom of Bahrain, who were selected using a snowball method, via cyberspace.

The results indicated an increase in the quality of life in each of the quality of education, the quality of family life, and the quality of public health. As for the gratitude variable, the results indicated that the level of gratitude was above average.

Furthermore, the study revealed that there is a statistically significant positive correlation between the quality of life and gratitude among the study sample, meaning that the higher the feeling of gratitude, the higher the quality of life, as the concept of gratitude refers to the tendency of the individual in general to give thanks and appreciation to others, and their benevolent role in providing assistance and the positive experience they received, followed by responding to it with a grateful emotion.

In addition, the results showed differences between males and females in favor of males in the overall quality of life, the quality of general health, the quality of emotions, and the quality of mental health, while females surpassed males in the quality of education. However, the results did not show differences between the genders in the quality of family and social life, and the quality of time occupation and management.
