A team of UoB students won first place in the Bahrain Hackathon competition, recently organized by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), among 12 teams from various universities in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Students from the College of Information Technology presented an electronic project that reviews the names of Internet sites in the Arabized domain, and provides them to users with a monthly subscription. This project aims to invest in Arabized domains and names and provide them to Arab users in order to facilitate the access of non-English speakers to Internet sites, in addition to providing e-mail titles in Arabic, and providing training and documentation for Arabized domains.

The student team consisted of: Aqeel Nazim, Salman Manna, Nawaf Nazir, Omar Haseeb and Fatima Al-Mirbati.

The competition included several activities prepared by the students to qualify for the final round, including: the use of Arabized Internet domains, the “Bahrain” domain in building websites and e-mail, and the use of Unicode. The participating teams also presented proposals to activate the use of localized domains as a viable business.

The hackathon competition aims to raise awareness on the importance of using Internet names and domains in multiple languages, with a focus on Arabizing the domain ( / .البحرين.bahrain– .bh). Teams from various public and private universities in the Kingdom of Bahrain participated in the competition. The jury who supervised the projects evaluation, included representatives from ICANN, in addition to a group of communication specialists.

The competition was organized by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) for Bahraini university students, for three consecutive days, in coordination with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Numbers and Names (ICANN), a global non-profit organization that oversees the development of systems and laws governing domains and logins on the World Wide Web.
