The English Language Center at the University of Bahrain organized the World Book Day event on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, to instill love of learning in university students, and to encourage them to read as a means of entertainment and spend time in useful and beneficial activities, and to improve their English language skills. The event was attended by some university students, in particular students of the foundation program, as well as students from the College of Arts and the Department of English Language.
The event, which was held at the English Language Center, included several recreational and educational activities and competitions, which were supervised by faculty members. These activities included the vocabulary game corner, the favorite book corner, draw on books and stories, and the technology corner for audio books.
For her part, the Director of the English Language Center, Dr. Dana Abdullah Abdel-Rahim, confirmed that the Center works to interest students in reading, for both entertainment and education purposes, to improve university life and post-university life. The event included several activities to allow students identify their levels in the English language and how to choose the appropriate books. It gave students the opportunity to share their experiences, express their opinions on the language and reading, and their favorite books. A group of deaf students were hosted to read some books in English, which were then translated into sign language.
Dr. Abdel-Rahim added that this event was the first of its kind, and that the Center is going to hold more competitions in reading selected books in English for the foundation program students in the upcoming days. She also called on students to benefit from the Learning Resource Center’s services, which supports students and improves their English language skills, from beginner to advanced levels, and helps them identify their interests and seek to refine them beyond the academic context.
The World Book Day is annually held on the third of March, with the participation of booksellers, publishing houses, and those interested in reading, to enhance the role of the book, as a valuable means for exchanging knowledge, understanding, and openness to the world.
