274 students from the College of Business Administration at the University of Bahrain (UoB) participated in a symposium on ethical practices for diversity and inclusion in the work environment, organized by SABIC in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in cooperation with the Pearl Initiative, and the coordinator of the M.Sc. in Human Resource Management program, Dr. Najla Fathi Al- Desouky.
Students from the M.Sc. in Human Resource Management program, and undergraduate students of the work ethics course at the College, participated in the interactive virtual symposium held recently, introducing a number of sustainable development goals, namely: quality education, gender equality, and decent work and economic growth.
The symposium aimed to raise students’ awareness on diversity and inclusion, and its importance in various settings, in addition to enhancing their knowledge about unconscious and conscious gender biases, their impact in the workplace, and key data-based strategies and tactics that can be used by business leaders and employees, to ensure mitigation of the severity of these biases.
Moreover, the symposium focused on the importance of addressing biases in the workplace as a corporate governance approach, and included topics on successful business practices that address bias in the workplace, practical knowledge, effective tools, and methods to mitigate bias, and provided examples of diversity and inclusion best practices implemented by SABIC and other companies in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region.
Dr. Al-Desouky expressed her gratitude to the hosts, their fruitful efforts, and their distinguished interaction with the students’ opinions and inquiries. She praised granting students the opportunity to write an essay on the lessons learned from the session, which led to improving their critical and analytical skills, as well as creating a knowledge bridge between the practical and theoretical knowledge of the students.
It is worth noting that the Pearl Initiative collaborates with major companies in the GCC region every semester, to discuss issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals.
