Two researchers at the University of Bahrain (UoB) utilized advanced computer power in data processing, in the Benefit Artificial Intelligence Lab, which was inaugurated in the College of Information Technology building in 2021. As the researchers Abdullah Sabah and Ali Marzooq, who are on a scholarship from UoB to the European CERN Organization, used supercomputers power.
PhD student, Abdullah Sabah, is conducting research aimed at using deep artificial intelligence in selecting the data that is collected from the experiments that happen at the Large Hadron Collider, as conducting experiments in the Large Collider results in a large amount of data that cannot be fully assimilated. Also, Sabah uses artificial intelligence to speed up the selection of a set of important data to be recorded, which requires high-speed work, as he carried out the main experiment by modeling the computers that perform this task, through the Benefit Lab servers’ package at UoB.
While Ali Marzooq, a master’s student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the College of Engineering, is conducting a simulation experiment of the turbulent flow of gases around a cylinder, in order to study phenomena arising from the state of turbulence that appear over time as a result of the air flow around the cylinder. The simulation was performed on a group of advanced computers at the Benefit Lab, instead of conducting it in an actual laboratory and to avoid costs.
In turn, the laboratory supervisor, Dr. Hisham Mohammed Al-Ammal, explained the importance of providing such research tools to researchers at UoB, stressing that this laboratory provided a supportive environment for advanced research carried out by students of master’s and PhD programs, by conducting a set of scientific experiments in a short period of time that doesn’t exceed a few minutes, while the completion of these experiments using a regular computer takes up to days and weeks.
It is noteworthy that UoB has partnered with Benefit to establish the advanced laboratory, which includes fast servers, that help researchers implement advanced models of artificial intelligence, which require supercomputing that is not provided by ordinary computers. A large number of bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD students have benefited from the laboratory’s features, in addition to using it in artificial intelligence competitions.
Moreover, UoB is working to strengthen cooperation with CERN – one of the largest research organizations in Europe and the world – through joint projects, student training and joint supervision of master’s and PhD students, with the aim of promoting scientific research and building partnerships with international research institutions.
