The Head of the Department of Architecture and Interior Design at the College of Engineering at the University of Bahrain (UoB), Dr. Huda Mohammed Al-Madhoob, noted the variety in final projects by students of the Bachelor’s in Architecture program, keeping pace with society’s needs and the rapid scientific development, which qualifies the program graduates to engage in the labor market and adapt to its changes. She also expressed her joy with the students’ focus on sustainable architecture to preserve the environment.
118 students in the architecture program in the Department of Architecture and Interior Design recently completed their final projects, and presented and discussed them before the arbitration and evaluation committees.
Dr. Al-Madhoob said this discussion took place after the projects were printed and presented to the arbitrators in one place, which was not possible during the Corona pandemic (Covid-19), noting that displaying the publications increases interaction, and allows students to know the opinions of the arbitrators.
Students of the graduation project in the architecture program this year are competing for two awards: the Mohammed Salahuddin Award for the Best Architectural Graduation Project, and the Green-Innova Award for Sustainability.
The arbitration committees included faculty members from the Department of Architecture and Interior Design, as well as a number of external arbitrators, both academics and architects, from inside and outside the Kingdom of Bahrain.
For her part, the coordinator of graduation projects for the architecture program in the department, Dr. Manal Jamil Khalaf, referred to the variability of the presented projects, which included a number of educational and cultural projects, such as: libraries, museums, recreational projects, such as hotels and resorts, and a number of housing projects that dealt with new ideas to solve housing problem.
She added that students implemented projects of a general social nature or dedicated to specific groups of society, including projects involving new ideas, such as: Bahrain sustainable market, culture and agriculture center, fishermen center, information and communication technology innovation center, open prison, knowledge society forum, Bahrain business acceleration center, and a cancer care center.
For their part, the judges praised the quality of students’ work, the diversity of projects and presentation methods, noting the projects’ focus on sustainable architecture, and the teachers’ encouragement of students to consider the environmental aspect in architectural design.
