Designing a museum touring application UoB Students Win Second Place in “Amazon Hackathon

The President of the University of Bahrain, Dr. Fuad Mohammed Al-Ansari, congratulated the university students on winning second place in the Amazon competition (INNOV8) Hackathon 2023, university students’ category. He stressed the importance of students’ participation in these competitions, which provides students with an opportunity for innovation and creativity in finding technical solutions and services, considering that the practical side is complementary to the theoretical aspect.

Dr. Al Ansari urged students to participate in local, regional and international scientific forums and competitions, which make the challenge a motivating factor for students to exert more efforts in reading, and to acquire scientific knowledge and experience in various scientific and specialized fields and the know-how of their use in practical aspects.

For her part, the Dean of the College of Information Technology, Dr. Hessa Jassim Al-Junaid, expressed pride UOB students’ level of performance in presenting the project. Remarking that that the college sets -within its academic plan- many materials and exercises that develop the spirit of innovation and creativity in finding solutions to technical challenges, and creativity in providing technical services to various professional and community sectors.

The jury announced that UOB “Bahrain Beyond” student team won second place in the university students category on Wednesday (May 17, 2023), at a ceremony honoring the winners of the Amazon Hackathon, in which around 100 teams of university students, high school students, and budding entrepreneurs from the Kingdom of Bahrain participated.

“Bahrain Beyond” team presented an application design project that aims to enhance the experience of the Bahrain National Museum. The application works to attract the largest number of citizens, residents, and tourists to visit the museum.

The student team, Walaa Ibrahim, Fatima Al Junaid, Abrar Ramadan, and Alireza, employed a group of cloud computing services provided by the Amazon cloud platform, and the application was distinguished by the use of augmented reality and allowing users gain a deeper understanding of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s ancient history.

The university took part in the competition as an educational partner, as it worked to provide a number of refereeing professors, trainers, and supervisors, in addition to the active student participation.

The awarding ceremony was attended by the Vice President for Community Service and Alumni Affairs, Dr. Mohammed Saleh Alansari, the Dean of the College of Information Technology, Dr. Hessa Jassim Al-Junaid, and the Assistant Professor of Cloud Computing and Information Security at the College of Information Technology, Dr. Abdulla Al-Asaadi.

INNOV8 is one of the largest cloud-based innovation events that aims to improve labor market conditions and contribute to economic development based on innovative solutions. This hackathon targets high school and university students, as well as junior employees at the beginning of their careers and budding entrepreneurs. The program supports talented Bahraini youth in the field of technology by honing their skills and providing the opportunity to develop innovative cloud-based solutions to address real-world challenges and issues.
