College of Business Administration at the University of Bahrain Discusses the Relationship between Procurement Department and Finance Department

The College of Business Administration at the University of Bahrain has hosted Shaima Al-Halibi, Acting Manager of Procurement at Gulf Air Group Holding Company, and Khaled Al-Hamar, Senior Accounts Payables & Audit at Bahrain Airport Company, in a webinar recently held under the theme “The Relationship between departments of Procurement and Finance”. The seminar was attended by about 200 university students.

 

The webinar was moderated by the lecturer at the Accounting Department, and PhD researcher in business analytics, Dawla Al-Mulla who pointed out the role of finance and its importance in the procurement department, and the interrelation between the two departments. She also noted that the webinar aims to transfer students’ theoretical and classroom knowledge into practical skills that are in high demand in companies and institutions.

 

Al-Halibi stressed the importance of procurement department, as it involves every activity related to obtaining goods and services a company needs to support its daily operations, including sourcing, negotiating terms, purchasing items, receiving, and inspecting goods as necessary, and keeping records of all the steps in the process.

 

She explained to the students the mechanism of the purchase order through a real scenario, noting the importance of procurement in supporting small and medium-sized companies, the role of the Tender Board and the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) – Bahrain Branch, which is a professional body of supply chain and procurement specialists. She also reviewed the opportunities available in procurement sector in Bahrain.

 

Al-Hamar pointed to the importance of financial resources, regarding expenditure and planning financing over a certain period. He also touched on several concepts, including budget, purchases, payments, payment cycle, and financing from receivables.

 

For her part, the faculty member in the Accounting Department, Dr. Noura Al-Zayed, said that conducting this type of webinars aims to prepare students for the labor market, and provide them with the necessary skills with the aim of linking theory to practice.
