The President of the University of Bahrain, Dr. Fuad Mohammed Al-Ansari, stressed that the University’s affiliates contribute to the implementation of many research projects at the local, regional, and international levels, noting that these contributions help them develop their capabilities in the fields of knowledge production and technology development in the fields of science, engineering, and computing.
Dr. Al-Ansari is due to sign an international cooperation agreement with the European Organization for Nuclear Research “CERN”, located on the border of France and Switzerland, during his visit to the Muon Detector Experiment Laboratory, one of the main laboratories of “CERN”, on 19 to 22 June 2023.
On this occasion, the President of the University stated, “one of the prominent research interests of the University is cooperation with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), with which many research projects have been completed, which promotes the status of the Kingdom of Bahrain among countries that contribute to knowledge production and technology development.”
For his part, the Dean of the College of Science and Chairman of the Committee of Cooperation Projects with CERN, Prof. Mohammad Mustafa El-hilo, explained that the University’s cooperation with the European Organization for Nuclear Research resulted in completion of a project by the College of Information Technology in the field of data processing, and another project by the College of Engineering to design and develop an automatic maintenance crane. Prof. El-hilo referred, “Two projects are currently being implemented by the College of Engineering in the field of sensors and cooling in the muon detector, as well as a project by the College of Information Technology in the field of improving the performance of data analyst programs.”
Prof. El-hilo added that the University of Bahrain’s participation in the muon detector experiment has helped several employees and students of UoB obtain opportunities to work on joint projects of education, training, and development with the European Organization for Nuclear Research in the fields of science, engineering, computer, and information technology. He indicated that the Committee of Cooperation Projects with “CERN” includes members from the various colleges.
For her part, the Dean of the College of Engineering, University of Bahrain, Dr. Shaikha Haifa bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, stated that the official visit to the European Organization is a culmination of the efforts of the College’s affiliates who completed pioneering projects in cooperation with the Organization.
Dr. Haifa bint Ibrahim stressed that the affiliates of the University of Bahrain continue to work as a team to expand cooperation with the European Organization, to complete projects that raise the capabilities of students and academians to the limit.
Seven students from UoB have completed their summer training at CERN, and three other students are to join the summer training program of the current year 2023.
It is worth mentioning that the University became a co-member in the muon detector experiment on February 8, 2019. The university’s partnership with “CERN” began through cooperation with the Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Center for Culture and Research. The European Organization for Nuclear Research “CERN” is the largest hadron collider in the field of high energy in the world.
