The University of Bahrain, as the representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain, signed an agreement with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) for scientific and technical cooperation in high energy physics, which reflects Bahrain’s interest in participation in the scientific program of the Organization.

The agreement was signed by the President of the University of Bahrain, Dr. Fuad Mohammed Al-Ansari on behalf of the University, and Director for International Relations, Charlotte Lindbergh Warakaulle on behalf of CERN.

Dr. Al-Ansar stressed the importance of strengthening international cooperation and partnerships to continue to develop basic sciences and technology, and link education and training to industry. He noted that the cooperation between the Kingdom of Bahrain, and CERN contributes to the promotion of Bahraini cadres and industries and gives affiliates of institutes and universities in Bahrain the opportunity to take part in research projects in basic sciences, engineering and computer, stressing that such institutes and universities can support the Organization’s research projects, in their respective fields.

Dr. Al-Ansari added that the cooperation agreement with CERN will enable scientists, researchers, engineers, teachers, students, and technicians from the Kingdom of Bahrain to apply to CERN schools, including the Accelerator School, the Computing School, the European School of High Energy Physics, and the CERN Summer Student Program. They will also open prospects for cooperation in the field of research and development, and link education and training to national industry.

The signing of this agreement reflects the Kingdom of Bahrain and CERN’s desire to create a framework that provides long-term opportunities for the participation of scientists, researchers, engineers, teachers, students, and technicians from the Kingdom of Bahrain in the research projects of the European Organization.

The signing of the agreement was attended by Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ambassador Dr. Yusuf Abdul Karim Bucheeri, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Shaikh Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Center for Culture and Research, Sheikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, Dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Shaikha Haifa bint Ibrahim. On June 19-22, 2023, the President of the University of Bahrain visited CERN, which is an intergovernmental organization based in Geneva, Switzerland to sign the agreement. He reviewed the muon detector laboratory, and the progress made by the University of Bahrain team, which includes research and teaching assistants, and postgraduate students on scholarship, working on several research and technical projects in the field of engineering and computers.

It is worthy to note that the University of Bahrain has become an Associated Institute in the muon detector experiment in 2019. Since then, it has started a partnership in implementing cooperation projects with the European Organization for Nuclear Research through cooperation with the Shaikh Ibrahim bin Mohammed Center for Culture and Research.
