Dr. Khenji: The Program Provides Basic Competencies for Practicing Midwifery at International Standards CHSS At UoB Offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery and Obstetrics

The College of Health and Sports Sciences (CHSS) at the University of Bahrain (UoB) announced the launch of the “Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery and Obstetrics” program in the first semester of the next academic year 2023/2024, in line with the scientific development in the modern curricula of nursing and midwifery sciences.
The Dean of CHSS, Dr. Lina Mohammed Khenji, affirmed that admission to the new program in the specialty of midwifery and obstetrics has been opened, as part of the National University’s interest in developing its academic programs, and its endeavor to offer specialized programs that are compatible with the needs of the labor market in the health field, and as a contribution to improving healthcare services in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
“The program aims to build national nursing competencies specialized in midwifery and obstetrics, capable of providing nursing care – based on modern scientific evidence – for women during the various stages of life, especially before and during pregnancy, labor and delivery, as well as during the postpartum period, while providing care for newborn babies, and everything related to the health of women and children. “, Dr. Khenji stated.
In addition, she pointed out that “The postgraduate diploma in midwifery and obstetrics program was developed on the basis of providing basic competencies for the practice of midwifery and obstetrics, within the international education standards of the International Confederation of Midwives, which grants graduates a license to practice midwifery, by the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA).”.
The applicant to the program is required to have: a Bachelor’s degree in nursing accredited by UoB or its equivalent from other universities, and a cumulative average (CGPA) of 2.67 out of 4.0 at the minimum or its equivalent in other systems, (applicants with a CGPA of 2.33 to 2.66 can apply for a postgraduate diploma in the midwifery program after passing three remedial courses in accordance with the postgraduate studies regulation at UoB).
Moreover, it is required to pass personal interview at the department level, submit two recommendation letters, have at least one year of on-the-job clinical experience, and hold a valid nursing license from the relevant responsible authorities (such as NHRA, or the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS), Oman Medical Specialties Board (OMSB), etc. In addition to English language competency with a score of 475 in TOFEL or 5.5 in IELTS.
The duration of study in the program is one and a half years, with three semesters, as the study plan of the program includes 11 academic courses, including 23 credit hours of practical (clinical) training, and theoretical lectures.

It is worth noting that CHSS offers a master’s degree in adult health nursing, and a postgraduate diploma in midwifery and obstetrics.
CHSS has been the main nucleus for the preparation of midwives since 1977 in the Kingdom of Bahrain and GCC countries.
