A student in the Bachelor of Architecture program at the College of Engineering at the University of Bahrain (UoB) designed an integrated beauty complex, which aims to highlight the creative side of cosmetology, and encourage people of all ages and groups to delve into the field of beauty and its care, while ensuring the use of a sustainable design, to activate the positive impact of the environment on human well-being.

Student Yasmeen Mahmood Al-Hindi won second place in the architectural design category for her graduation project titled: “Allure Beauty Center,” which she completed under the supervision of a faculty member in the Department of Architecture and Interior Design, lecturer Weldy Eka Saputra.

Al-Hindi stated that “Allure Beauty” offers an educational institute and an exhibition hall suitable for all events that can be held there, such as beauty exhibitions, beauty tools and products sale exhibitions, seasonal events, and recreational facilities of landscapes such as gardens and green spaces.

“I employed sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions, in terms of creating landscapes and adopting various technologies for cooling and reducing energy consumption. As I used fiberglass-reinforced concrete for the walls, which is characterized by being easy to form, long-lasting, environmentally friendly, excellent heat insulator, and reasonably priced. In addition, I used permeable environmental pavers for the parking lots, to reduce ground heat and the accumulation of rainwater, along with the use of interlocking sidewalks for the courtyards, which require low maintenance.”, she added.

Moreover, she pointed to her interest in cultural sustainability, through the use of oriental elements and our architectural heritage. For example, she used the mashrabiya on the external balconies, as the balcony is one of the traditional elements in Islamic architecture, and it combines Arab culture with modern ideas and requirements, by controlling the access of light, helping with air circulation, and providing privacy.
