The University of Bahrain Holds “A Step towards Life” to Raise Awareness on Breast Cancer

The President of the University of Bahrain, Dr. Fuad Mohammed Al-Ansari, inaugurated the educational and awareness-raising event “A Step towards Life” to raise awareness on breast cancer, organized by the University’s Equal Opportunities Committee, in conjunction with the International Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Dr. Al-Ansari toured the educational stations located in the administration lobby at the University’s premises in Sakhir, where students of various majors participated in educating the attendees on the importance of early breast cancer detection. The students reviewed the stages of disease development, and the importance of following a healthy lifestyle, to reduce the risk of infection of this disease.
Following the inauguration, the University President stated, “During this month, the University of Bahrain holds events aimed at raising awareness among its affiliates about the dangers of breast cancer, its effects on women and the community, how to prevent it, and the necessity of paying attention to periodic examination. He lauded the efforts of the Equal Opportunities Committee, the College of Health and Sport Sciences, and the cooperation of all colleges in educating university female students about the importance of periodic examination to prevent infection with the disease, or its rapid development, which may put the patient’s life at risk.”
For her part, the Dean of the College of Health and Sport Sciences and the Head of the University’s Equal Opportunities Committee, Dr. Leena Mohammad Khonji, indicated that a series of events are to be held at the university on 17 – 31 October. She indicated that a campaign shall be organized by the College of Health and Sport Sciences, under the supervision of the university’s nursing and midwifery team, under the theme “Pink University”, with the aim of raising community awareness to prevent breast cancer.
Dr. Khonji pointed out that several corners have been prepared in all the University’s colleges, each of which contains educational sessions that guide participants to the correct methods for periodic breast self-examination for early prevention of the disease, noting that a clinical examination shall be conducted by a specialized team.
Dr. Khonji stressed the importance of educational sessions, which aim to educate the community. She noted that a discussion session was held and that participants discussed the most important frequently asked questions about breast cancer. Consultant of general, breast and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Mariam Al-Junaidi participated in this session, as well as Farah Ali, one of those recovering from the disease, whereas she shared her personal experience with the disease, and the lessons learned.
Dr. Khonji pointed out that the event included several activities related to healthy lifestyles, psychological adaptation, managing stress, health assessment, and exercising. She pointed to the participation of the College of Law with constitutional provisions and laws related to health, and that of the College of Engineering with student graduation projects related to breast cancer, in addition to graduate students’ projects and studies related to the disease. She stressed that the event aimed at making a positive impact on behavior through maintaining a healthy lifestyle, to reduce the risk of infection with the disease.
