Students of the Furniture Design course in the Department of Architecture and Interior Design at the University of Bahrain reviewed their creativity to design a coffee table, using the scientific foundations in furniture design that they studied in the academic course.
The department organized the exhibition of artistic coffee tables on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. The exibition was opened by the Acting Dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Hessa Jassim Al-Junaid who reviewed 94 of students work.
Dr. Al-Junaid expressed her happiness with the students’ solid projects, which were characterized by creativity and innovation, noting that the diversity of ideas reflects the wealth of knowledge that students acquired during their studies.
She stressed the importance of projects appearing in public, so that private sector institutions and companies specialized in furniture take advantage of them, and transfer the appropriate ones to production lines.
The course professor, Dr. Noor Nabil Aldoy, explained that the exhibition is one of the furniture design course (INTD 324) requirements, directed to students studying the bachelor’s program in interior design in their third year, noting that the project is to design a coffee table with an artistic perspective, and creative design.
“The students presented high and innovative performance levels, using the design arts they learned with beautiful creative touches,” said Dr. Aldoy.
She pointed to the diversity of students’ projects, as some developed ideas inspired by artworks, while others applied a variety of artistic techniques that can be implemented in innovative ways to form an artistic coffee table.
“The students used a variety of materials such as clay, wood, cardboard, plastic, glass, steel, fabric, and gypsum to depict their designs in a three-dimensional physical model,” she said, noting that the process of producing these models was done using manual modeling, computer machining, and three-dimensional printing, all of which helped build distinctive coffee tables for cafes.
