In collaboration with the Turkish Embassy in Bahrain UoB Organizes “IRCICA Generation Exhibition” for Arabic Calligraphy

The activities of “IRCICA Generation Exhibition” for Arabic Calligraphy, were launched at the University of Bahrain, organized by Yunus Emre Institute for Teaching Turkish Language, in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The university hosted Turkish calligrapher Efdaluddin KILIC from the College of Theology at Marmara University to present a workshop in the art of Arabic calligraphy, as part of the activities of the “Generation IRCICA Exhibition” held at the Media Center on the campus in Sakhir.

The opening of the exhibition on Monday, April 22, 2024 was attended by Dr. Fuad Mohammed Al-Ansari, President of the University of Bahrain, Esin Çakel, Turkish Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, and Saeed Kasmaoğlu, responsible for the Arts and Crafts Department at IRCICA.

 

The opening ceremony witnessed the screening of an introductory video about the Yunus Emre Institute and the Research Center for Islamic History, Arts and Culture (IRCICA).

Dr. Al-Ansari, President of the University of Bahrain, stressed the importance of Arabic calligraphy – which joined the list of intangible cultural heritage – because of its impact in various fields of science, literature and arts, pointing to the role of the exhibition in highlighting the development of Arabic calligraphy in a creative way, combining modernity and originality.

Saeed Kasmaoğlu delivered a speech in which he stressed the need to introduce the masterpieces of Islamic art and encourage artists, pointing to the role of the center in organizing many exhibitions in various countries, containing various branches of Islamic arts, including calligraphy, decoration, gilding, engraving on wood and other materials, miniatures, drawing, paper (abro), and other works.

He pointed to IRCICA’s role in organizing international calligraphy competitions every three years since 1986, focusing on the art of gilding in its programs and events in the field of arts, organizing training courses to refine the talents of artists in the art of calligraphy and gilding (decoration), publishing studies related to calligraphy, and brochures to teach calligraphy.

The exhibition, which runs until April 28 at the University’s Central Library, presents models of award-winning paintings in IRCICA calligraphy competitions, and several other works belonging to many calligraphers, which represent different variations of Arabic calligraphy, and reflect its aesthetics in the Arab-Islamic heritage, including: Thuluth script, Naskh, Diwani, Kufic and others.

It is worth noting that Yunus Emre Institute promotes and supports international scientific and academic work in Turkey, and the institute cooperates with more than 100 universities in more than 60 countries as part of the Turkish linguistics project, offers courses in Turkish language and Turkish culture, and supports department heads for the same purpose.
