Assists Emergency Vehicles to Cross Unstopped UOB Student Team Develops Smart Traffic Light Management System

A student team at the University of Bahrain has developed a smart traffic light management system that recognizes emergency vehicles and allows them to pass to reach their destination in a timely manner.

The project, designed by students Batoul Sayed Majeed Mahdi, Zainab Fadel Abbas, and Zainab Mohamed Reda Al-Zemmour from the Department of Computer Engineering at the College of Information Technology, aims to reduce the number of ambulances and emergency vehicles’ stops at traffic lights, which helps to quickly reach the desired destination, in the shortest time possible.

The system, which recently won second place in the graduation projects exhibition organized by the College of Information Technology, includes a smart feature that enables the detection of emergency vehicle lights in real time, using a webcam connected to traffic lights, and then the command is given by automatedly turning on the green light for the emergency vehicle to cross.

The students confirmed that the tested model achieved high achieved high-accuracy results in real-time identification of emergency vehicles. The project was supervised by Dr. Alaa Al-Din Al-Omari, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering at the University of Bahrain.
