A research and teaching assistant from the College of Science at the University of Bahrain participated in the Third Gulf Chemists Union Symposium, with research paper that highlighted the significance of utilizing the Carbon Penta-belt, as a support material for designing Single Atom Catalysts (SAC) for the water splitting reaction.

Abdulrahman AbdulKareemAl-Langkawi, Teaching and Research Assistant from the Department of Chemistry at UOB and a member of the Bahrain Chemical Society, participated with his research paper in the Third Gulf Chemists Union Symposium in Ras Al Khaimah. This paper is a result of one of several studies he is working on within the master’s program in environmental chemistry, which he joined within the internal scholarship program at the university.

The Bahrain Chemical Society nominated Mr. Allangawi, to present one of his latest publications titled “Transition metal loaded carbon penta-belt SACs for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions and identification of systematic DFT method to characterize the main interacting orbital for non-periodic system”.

Allangawi said “I hope this work contributes to the advancement in Bahrain in sustainable energy by providing a possible method for hydrogen and oxygen production to fully realize green hydrogen energy”, as shed light on the possibility of utilizing the Carbon Penta-belt, which is a compound from the newly attained Carbon Nanobelt family, as a support material for designing Single Atom Catalysts (SAC) for the water splitting reaction.

The presented work by Mr. Abdulrahman was supervised by Dr. Tariq Mahmood from the Chemistry department at UOB.

The Emirates Chemical Society hosted the third Gulf Chemists Symposium in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, on the 25th of May of 2024, under the theme “Chemical applications for a beautiful world”.
