UoB Students win Kaspersky Cybersecurity Cup

Prof. Riyad Y. Hamzah, President of the University of Bahrain, congratulated UoB students who won the Kaspersky Cybersecurity Cup 2018, held at the College of Information Technology in Sakhir on Wednesday, 21 March 2018. After competing with teams from universities across Bahrain, UoB students won the first place in the Awareness Cyber Cup category and Technical Cyper Cup category.

In a statement congratulating the winners, Prof. Riyad Y. Hamzah, President of the University of Bahrain said, “We’d like to congratulate the winners on their well-deserved achievements. The issue of cybersecurity is a major concern that needs significant attention and we are delighted to collaborate with Kaspersky Lab on this initiative, as we believe this competition is a meaningful step towards creating highly skilled experts, solutions and leaders in the field of cybersecurity within Bahrain and the region.” He added that the University of Bahrain is aware of the importance of cybersecurity in an IT education context, and has held forums with specialists from all regional sectors to discuss the latest developments in this field.

Kaspersky Lab announced the winners of its Kaspersky Cybersecurity Cup in Bahrain. The winners, Batool Sayed Shubbar, who won in the Awareness Cyber Cup category and team Connect Tech (members: Ahmed Samer Abdurahman, Fajer Mohammed Alkaabi and Samya Fareed Hasan), who got the first place in the Technical Cyper Cup category, won an all-expenses paid trip to visit the company’s VirusLab in Moscow, Russia and will get a first-hand look of how Kaspersky Lab experts monitor and detect the most advanced cyber threats from around the world. This experience is designed to widen the winner’s perspective on the world of cybersecurity and give them a chance to interact with professionals working in this field.

Dr Lamya Mohamed Aljasmi, Dean of the College of Information Technology, said, “This competition is an important step towards preparing experts in the field of cybersecurity. Batool Shubbar, the winner of the Awareness Cyber Cup category, said, “I am happy that my project won this contest, and I look forward to the added experience of visiting the Kaspersky Lab VirusLabs in Moscow. Getting exposure to real-world situations alongside my studies will definitely help to be better prepared for the tasks and challenges I will face in the workplace. ”

Ahmed Abdulrahman, from UoB Team Connect Tech, winners of the Technical Cyber Cup category, said, “I couldn’t be more honored to win the competition and represent our university at Kaspersky Lab’s global headquarters and VirusLabs. I’m excited and passionate about the potential of the cybersecurity industry, and appreciate the opportunity to learn more from global players.”

Kaspersky Cybersecurity Cup 2018 covers three sectors: financial services, vital infrastructure and telecommunications. The latter includes the Awareness Cyber Cup category and the Internet of Things (Technical Cyber Cup category). All submissions were reviewed by an expert jury and then pitched to experts from Kaspersky Lab and the University of Bahrain.
