UoB First Nationally and 213 Globally on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019

News 08 04 2019 1aNews 08 04 2019 1cUoB has made another remarkable achievement by ranking first in Bahrain and 213 globally on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019. The rankings of the top five hundred universities worldwide in relation to the recent University Impact in fulfilling the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were announced at The Times Higher Education Innovation and Impact Summit.

The summit was held at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), one of the world’s leading research and technology universities, from 2 to 4 April 2019.

On this occasion, UoB President Prof. Riyad Y. Hamzah expressed his gratitude to the Kingdom’s wise leadership for their continuous support of the University. He also thanked the Supreme Council for the Development of Education and Training and the UoB Board of Trustees for guiding the university to achieve its goals more effectively.

UoB rated among the top 5% world universities on the QS World University Rankings 2018, landing position 411 in Employer Reputation. It achieved the top position in Bahrain and 25 in the Arab world on the QS Arab University Rankings, jumping up 17 spots in less than three years.

“In line with the Economic Vision 2030 and the government Action Plan, UoB has taken steady steps towards implementing the Transformation Plan (2016 – 2021) endorsed by the Supreme Council for the Development of Education and Training and the UoB Board of Trustees. UoB continues its work in unity. It has laid a foundation for a new era of institutional excellence through its focus on research, innovation and partnerships with the business and industrial sectors nationally and internationally,” said Prof. Hamzah.

“International university rankings utilize lagging metrics, such as research quality and applications, hosting international conferences, attracting high calibre of academics. UoB has started to reap the rewards of its efforts towards promoting research during the last three years. It has implemented strategies addressing the demands of the fourth industrial revolution, invested in modernizing its campus to handle the increasing number of students, and digitalized student services resulting in cost savings and time efficiencies. To promote sustainability, a number of initiatives were also implemented including converting the university into a green campus,” added Prof. Hamzah.

He also said that UoB has developed new higher studies programmes and created partnerships with acclaimed international academic institutions to launch joint academic programs. The university has obtained financial revenue from several research contracts. Innovation, entrepreneurship, information technology, renewable energy and water and economic security are examples of the multitude of topics addressed during various international conferences, organized by the university recently and which involved national and international subject-matter experts.
