Architecture Students at UoB Present Their Projects at the Design Forum 

 

Students and graduates from the Department of Architecture and Interior Design at the College of Engineering at the University of Bahrain (UoB) presented creative designs and projects during their participation in the Fourth Design Forum, which was recently organized by the Department of Architecture and Interior Design.  

Architects and academics participated in the two-day Forum, along with a number of students who spoke on a variety of architectural topics in the fields of traditional architecture, practical experience, and sustainable design. The student inputs were prominent not only in their topics, but also in the methods of presentation, their boldness, and novelty, noting that some of the papers presented by the students were published in research journals. 

Final year student in the architecture program, Shatha Najib Ghurbal, reviewed the idea for a project of ​​a coast dedicated to women, as she presented a scientific paper on women’s empowerment, and the importance of the architect’s role in providing integrated and promising architectural solutions, aimed at raising the physical, health and cultural levels of women, by designing urban content for them in the Kingdom. 

Also, Ghurbal presented a joint scientific paper with the faculty member in the Department of Architecture and Interior Design, Dr. Islam Hamdi Elghonaimy, explaining the steps of scientific publishing to her fellow students, so that they could follow her steps to be published in prestigious international journals.  

Ghurbal designed a coastal complex for women, with the aim of creating a sustainable healthy environment that rid women of all the pressures imposed on them by daily burdens, and provided women’s needs in relation to the local cultural value. 

While the former student in the Department, Mohammed Rajab, reviewed his experience in achieving sustainability in the design of external spaces in several projects in the Kingdom, and how he was involved in the professional field, and was able to develop his skills through practice in the urban sector, as well as his current contributions to the development of distance architectural education in the Ministry of Education and specifically in the industrial education sector, as part of the Kingdom’s efforts to contain the negative effects of the Corona pandemic. 

Meanwhile, the graduate of the Department, Ashar Habbab, spoke about the environmental problems resulting from the lack of optimal use of recycling, with an integrated presentation on the possibility of recycling shipping containers in Bahrain, and how to convert them into architectural units, and showed her success in presenting her ideas in this field through scientific publication in one of the United Nations Conferences, in addition to another at a distinguished scientific conference, while preparing her senior project. 

Also, the student, Safa Jamal, gave a presentation on the sustainable projects that have been implemented in Bahrain, and her experience in cooperating with the private sector. As she reviewed the impact of renewable energy projects in preserving and developing the wealth of the Kingdom of Bahrain in depth, with the benefits and positive results of each. 

The presentations of former students in the department of interior designer Sughra Al-Jadeed, and students in the postgraduate program at the College Ola Sa’ad and Mohammed Shana’a were also included, in addition to the final year student in the Department of Architecture and Interior Design, Noora Al-Badal. 

Moreover, Dr. Haifa bint Ebrahim Al Khalifa, Head of the Department of Architecture and Interior Design at the College of Engineering at the University, stated that the Fourth Architecture Forum is a witness to the qualitative shift in the cultural and cognitive activities of the students of the Department. 

As the dialogue meetings, organized by the Forum via the Teams platform, introduced three different points of view, presented by practitioners, academics, and alumni. 

Also, the Head of the Department expressed her gratitude to all the attendees and guest speakers, who enriched the Forum with their proposal, which was well received and attended by a large number of students and participants from inside and outside the University.
