A UoB Student is Chosen for Training at CERN in Switzerland
A student in the Department of Physics at the College of Science at the University of Bahrain (UoB) was selected from among thousands of students applying for summer training around the world in a special program for physics students in Switzerland, to join 300 other students from different universities and countries to undergo an intensive training program at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).
The student, Abdullah Mohammed Al-Zayed, is due to start his training on the thirteenth of next July, for a period of up to eight continuous weeks, in which he will be able to attend a series of lectures prepared by a group of scientists and researchers in the field of theoretical and experimental particle physics, and to attend discussion sessions and workshops, which will qualify him to prepare a research project under the supervision of a researcher at CERN, provided that he must submit a report after completing the training period on the work and project that he will accomplish during that period.
The Head of the Physics Department at the College of Science at UoB, Dr. Hanan Mubarak Al-Buflasa, said: “The participation of the student in the most important scientific research centers in the field of elementary particle physics is a unique opportunity to work and have communication with international research teams, and to participate in the world’s major scientific experiments.”.
Furthermore, Dr. Al-Buflasa explained that due to the exceptional circumstances of the spread of the Corona pandemic “COVID-19”, this year’s training program will be conducted remotely. Noting that this will not affect the progress of the training program for students, and stressing that the participation of the student from the Physics Department at UoB in this international scientific event is evidence of the Department’s interest in communicating with global scientific activities, especially with this prestigious international scientific center.
Also, she stated that: “This participation comes within UoB’s strategy in improving the scientific level in various fields, including engaging with international institutions and research centers, supported by the University Administration and its president, Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah, and the Dean of the College of Sciences, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Mustafa Al-Hilo.”. Pointing out that this training program was coordinated and supervised by the Assistant Professor of Elementary Particle Physics, Dr. Mohammed Yousef Hussain.
The student’s participation comes within the framework of the existing scientific cooperation between UoB and the Research Center for Elementary Particle Physics, a Center for Elementary Particle Physics”, branching off from the Shaikh Ebrahim Bin Mohammad Al-Khalifa Center for Culture and Research, and “CERN”, especially after UoB joined as a participating member of the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment (CMS).
It is worth noting that CERN operates the world’s largest particle accelerators and provides major experiments to understand the depths of the fundamental components of matter, as more than 16 thousand scientists, researchers, and doctoral students work there. The Large Hadron Collider is the largest particle accelerator and has the highest energy and speed in the world, with a diameter of about 27 kilometers, and it is built underground at a depth of about 100 meters between France and Switzerland near the city of Geneva. This accelerator is used to collide protons with an energy of up to 7 Tera-electron volts (TeV).
