UoB Architecture and Interior Design Students Design an Herbarium for the College of Science
The students of the Department of Architecture and Interior Design at the College of Engineering at the University of Bahrain (UoB) designed an herbarium laboratory at the College of Science, in a competition that was supported by the National Initiative for the Development of the Agricultural Sector.
The organizing committee of the competition recently announced the winners through a virtual ceremony, in the presence of the Secretary-General of the National Initiative for the Development of the Agricultural Sector, Sheikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, the President of UoB, Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah, faculty members, and participating students.
During the celebration, the University President stated in his speech: “On this day, we celebrate with you and our dear students the winning projects in the design competition for the herbarium laboratory of the Department of Life Sciences at the College of Science,” noting that “This competition was generously sponsored by the National Initiative for the Development of the Agricultural Sector, and it comes as a result of cooperation between the students of the Department of Architecture and Interior Design and the Department of Life Sciences to present a new vision in a distinctive interior design for the herbarium laboratory.”
Expressing his pleasure to cooperate with the “National Initiative for the Development of the Agricultural Sector in this distinguished project, and his aspiration to have further cooperation in other future projects to provide educational and practical opportunities for UoB students and to benefit from the expertise available on both sides.”
Furthermore, he stressed that the participation of students of the Department of Architecture, Interior Design and Environmental Architecture in this design competition contributes to the process of developing innovation and creative work for students, and prepares them to enter the work environment that depends mainly on the spirit of an integrative team, as each specialization complements the other to reach innovative and practical solutions.
For her part, the Head of the Department of Architecture and Interior Design, Dr. Haifa bint Ebrahim Al Khalifa, praised the efforts made by the organizing committee to achieve such distinguished outputs for the competition, which attracted large numbers of the Department’s students and graduates.
As the Head of the Department of Architecture and Interior Design pointed out the importance of organizing such specialized competitions to stimulate students’ abilities, emphasize their talents, and develop their creativity and innovation. Also, she thanked the members of the organizing committee, the projects arbitration team, the National Initiative for the Development of the Agricultural Sector, and the University Administration for its continuous support and keenness to develop the outputs of various academic programs.
During the ceremony, it was announced that the student Taif Al-Qassab won the first prize, while the two students, Nasser Sarhan and Moureed Tarif, won the second place, as the award for the outstanding project – according to the audience’s vote – went to the two students, Shouq Shawqi and Marwa Abdulrahman.
The projects participating in the competition were subject to scientific arbitration by a team consisting of Head of the Department of Architecture and Interior Design Dr. Haifa bint Ebrahim Al Khalifa, Head of the Department of Life Sciences Dr. Salwa Mutlaq Al-Thawadi, a faculty member in the Department of Life Sciences Dr. Thuraya Abdulrahman Al-Mansoori, and faculty member in the same Department, Ibtisam Issa Buti.
