UoB Invites University Students to the “Culture and Tourism Applications Development Hackathon” 

 

The Dean of the College of Information Technology at the University of Bahrain (UoB), Dr. Lamya Mohammed Al-Jasmi, announced the opening of registration for all university students in the Kingdom of Bahrain to participate in the ” Culture and Tourism Applications Development Hackathon”, which is scheduled to be held in April and May 2021, under the patronage of the President of UoB, Prof. Dr. Riyad Yousif Hamzah, in cooperation with the branch of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society Bahrain Chapter. 

Dr. Al Jasmi stated that “The Bahrain Culture and Tourism Hackathon aims to involve all students from the universities of the Kingdom of Bahrain in developing applications that serve the Bahraini community, achieve sustainable development goals, encourage students and motivate them to practice solving challenges, analysis, design and programming, in a competitive atmosphere, as well as enhancing the values ​​of citizenship among participants, enrich students’ skills and knowledge in programming through technical, introductory and guidance workshops, enhance students’ ability to work effectively in teams of diverse disciplines, and encourage students to use various techniques, skills and tools acquired in computing, in addition to developing applications or games that can enhance the status of Bahrain as an important tourism attraction at the regional and international levels. 

Dr. Al-Jasmi further explained that this activity will be a platform for academics, professionals, industrial partners and society, and will contribute to raising the aspirations of the next generation of computing and artificial intelligence professionals, in addition to highlighting the cultural and tourism landmarks in Bahrain in modern and innovative ways and enhancing the spirit of citizenship and belonging towards our dear Kingdom. 

For her part, Dr. Resala Al-Adraj, President of the Computer Society of IEEE, stressed the importance of encouraging students and academics to develop their outputs to qualify them to compete at higher levels in the labor market in the future. 

Dr. Al-Adraj explained that Society continuously encourages youth energies through its programs, and holds various partnerships with the leading educational institutions and bodies in the Kingdom of Bahrain, especially UoB. 

Moreover, she confirmed that virtual workshops will be hosted from 4 to 8 April for students wishing to participate and that the arbitration and the announcement of the final results will be from 23 to 27 May 2021.
