“ABET” Renews the Accreditation of Seven Academic Programs

 “ABET” Renews the Accreditation of Seven Academic Programs Up to 2027, from the College of Engineering and the College of Information Technology of UOB  

 

Following the declaration of the American Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) of the renewal of the accreditation of seven academic programs in the College of Engineering and the College of Information Technology, the President of the University of Bahrain, Professor Riyad Youssef Hamzah declared that takes pride in the distinguished achievements of the two colleges. Professor Hamzah lauded the great efforts exerted by the administration of both colleges for the sake of achieving the highest scientific and academic levels. 

Professor Hamzah stated that “One of the objectives we tirelessly strive to achieve is to obtain international accreditation for the maximum possible number of our university programs as such accreditation plays a crucial role in improving the outputs of UOB, which contribute to enforcing development in the Kingdom of Bahrain.” 

Prof. Hamzah pointed out that the College of Engineering is one of the most prestigious colleges in the university since its establishment in 1986 as it has taken many steps for development through adopting the best methods of academic work to maintain its prestige and position among its counterparts in the region. He added that the College of Information Technology is constantly seeking to develop and introduce new programs to keep pace with changes and developments in the fields of information technology, including bachelor’s in network engineering, bachelor’s in Software Engineering, and bachelor’s in Cyber ​​Security. These programs were designed considering international academic standards such as those of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). 

 For his part, the Dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Fouad Mohammed Al-Ansari, stated “ABET has accredited seven academic programs of UOB till 2027, namely chemical, electrical, mechanical, electronic, civil engineering and Process Instrumentation & Control, in addition to Computer Engineering Program at the College of Information Technology.  

Dr. Al-Ansari indicated that the engineering disciplines at UOB has at an early stage voluntarily adopted international accreditation approach. He stressed that work related to program accreditation began in 2006 and that the six programs of the College of Engineering obtained the first accreditation from ABET in 2009 and it was renewed in 2015. It is noteworthy that all programs of the college are locally accredited, and that seven out of the nine undergraduate university programs were placed on the National Qualifications Framework. 

 For her part, the Dean of the College of Information Technology at UOB, Dr. Lamia Mohammed Al Jasmi, stated “The college currently offers bachelor programs in computer science, computer engineering, and information systems.” She stressed that all these programs were accredited by ABET in 2010, the accreditation of Computer Engineering program was renewed in 2014, and the accreditation of computer science and information systems programs was renewed in 2017.  

 Dr. Lamia added that the programs of the college were constantly developed and underwent continuous review through several performance measurement programs, including the United Nations Development Program in 2003. The programs also received full credit from the National Education & Training Quality Authority in 2014. 

 

It is noteworthy that the programs of the College of Engineering at UOB first obtained accreditation from ABET in 2009, and that the College of Information Technology obtained the same accreditation in 2010.
