The University of Bahrain (UoB) has maintained a steady growth in the number of scientific research published on the global database of refereed scientific publication (Scopus), during the past five years, as the National University’s research reached its peak in the past year 2020, despite the difficulties imposed by the Corona pandemic (Covid-19).
The figures indicate an increase in the number of research from 150 in 2015 to 520 in the past year 2020. Scopus is active in accrediting and following up scientific journals, conferences, and books, and issuing a research impact factor for each journal.
According to the international database figures, the University published 439 refereed scientific research on the indexing network in the year 2019, and the number increased to 520 scientific research last year.
The President of UoB, Dr. Jawaher bint Shaheen Al-Mudhahki, said: “The steady development in the production of scientific research is the result of the National University’s endeavor to focus on specialized research projects and provide appropriate solutions to sustainability issues and challenges in the region.”
Moreover, she explained that the University encourages its researchers, whether professors or postgraduate students, to pay attention to national and regional research priorities, foremost of which are the issues of: renewable energy, water security, and food security, stressing that the National University is proceeding with a policy of activating research plans, promoting the culture of the production and dissemination of scientific research in global indexing systems, and providing all research capabilities for its employees.
The University President called for keeping pace with research developments and trying to contribute to find solutions in modern methods, stressing that the responsibility of researchers increases in crises, stressing the need to spread the culture of scientific research, so that all faculty members contribute to the process of research production and publication without exception.
For his part, the Dean of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research at the University, Dr. Mohammed Redha Qader, indicated that Scopus’s figures indicate a steady growth in the number of published research over the past years.
Also, he stated that the University encourages its professors to publish their research in refereed journals, and to promote research citation in global indexing systems, explaining that the University is looking forward to publishing the largest number of doctoral and master’s theses as well.
Furthermore, he indicated that several factors contributed to the growth in the rate of scientific publication, the most important of which are: the University’s support for researchers, organizing research events, linking researchers in different colleges, conducting participatory research with several universities, in addition to attracting scientific competencies in faculty members.
The Dean of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research pointed out that there are dozens of researches conducted by the University’s professors during the past year, but these researches have not been published on the Scopus database, because they were published in Arabic, in addition to the contractual researches of the supporting bodies.
The materials of faculty members at the University which were published by Scopus varied, as articles, scientific papers, books or chapters were published, and engineering scientific papers topped the published research in terms of numbers, followed by scientific papers related to materials science, then information technology and computer science papers, in addition to physics and astronomy.
UoB seeks to expand the organization of conferences, in cooperation with prestigious research institutions, in addition to publishing research in reputable scientific journals.
Also, he stated that the Deanship has recently organized four scientific conferences: the “International Conference on Science and Applications for Decision Making” in its second edition held on (7 – 8 December 2021), the “International Conference on Sustainable Islamic Business and Finance” held on (5 -6 December 2021), the “Third International Conference on Sustainability and Resilience” held on (15-16 November 2021), and the “Virtual World Conference on Data Analytics for Economy and Industry” in its second edition held on (October 25 and 26, 2021).
As Dr. Qader stated that: “There is no doubt that conferences open wide horizons for researchers, and allow them to publish their research in prestigious scientific platforms,” stressing that “the University encourages professors to conduct research in partnership with academics from outside the University, whether at the regional or international level, and it is in the process of launching the Award of the University of Bahrain President for Scientific Research after its development”.
