A Study at the University of Bahrain Suggests Linking the Benefits of Marriage to Participation in Marital and Family Life Courses

A scientific study conducted at the University of Bahrain suggested the establishment of a fund aimed at helping prospective spouses and coordinating between government and civil authorities to regulate marriage aids sponsored by civil societies, and link beneficiaries’ access to benefits and facilities to participation in training courses related to preparing for marital and family life.

The study was prepared by the student in Masters of Family Counseling at the College of Arts, University of Bahrain, Ramlet Juma Al-Mawali, in fulfillment of the requirements master’s degree in family counseling. The thesis was entitled “The Effectiveness of a Counseling Program in Enhancing the Concept of Marital Harmony among a Sample of Prospective Spouses Kingdom of Bahrain.”

The researcher stated that her study aimed to verify the effectiveness of a counseling program in enhancing the concept of marital harmony among a sample of prospective spouses in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The researcher used the two-group quasi-experimental approach.

The researcher indicated that she had implemented the counseling program for enhancing the concept of marital harmony, and that after completion of the counseling program, and pre, while, and post evaluation, the findings revealed the effectiveness of the counseling program, which was based on family counseling theories in enhancing the concept of marital harmony.

The study recommended training staff in family counselling centers in the government and private sectors and religious institutions and enabling them to provide counselling programs on preparing for marriage, developing marital harmony, and dealing with conflict situations and marital problems in the early years.

The thesis discussion committee consisted of the head of the Department of Psychology, University of Bahrain, Dr. Sheikha Ahmed Al-Junaid as a supervisor, faculty member of the Psychology Department, Dr. Tawfiq Abdel Moneim Tawfiq, as an internal examiner, and Professor of Psychology, Assiut University, Dr. Ahmed Kamal Al-Bahnasawy as an external examiner.
