The College of Business Administration, University of Bahrain Presents an Intensive Workshop on Corporate Governance Issues

The Department of Accounting at the College of Business Administration, University of Bahrain organized an intensive workshop on “Corporate Governance Issues”, which was presented by assistant professor in the department, Dr. Mohammad Abdul Rahman Janahi. The workshop was attended by 20 participants of postgraduate students and members of the academic staff of the College.

The workshop aimed to prepare well-versed researchers in the field of corporate governance, and its impact on corporate financial data and decisions. Some related scientific research was discussed, focusing on theories and research tools used in this field of research.

During the two-day workshop, Dr. Janahi reviewed the impact of corporate governance legalization on performance, noting that forcing companies to appoint independent board members does not necessarily improve the performance of the company, unless information is available and accessible to the independent member.

Dr. Janahi added that lack of appropriate and accurate information for the independent member has negative impacts. He provided the participants with a detailed explanation of some of the research tools used, to show the causal relationship in this type of research.

The workshop touched on the influence of women in senior positions on financial decisions, on the last day of the workshop, Tuesday, March 1, 2022. Participants had the opportunity to read and analyze a groundbreaking research examining CFO gender and financial statement irregularities published in the Journal of the Academy of Management.

Dr. Janahi have discussed with graduate students different theories on “The Influence of Women on Corporate Performance “, which are divided into two categories. some of the theories expect that the role of women will be positive in improving corporate performance, while other theories conclude that the gender of the director or member of the board of directors has no effect on the performance.

Dr. Janahi referred to the most important research methods in this field, such as (instrumental variable analysis) and (propensity score matching), which contribute to demonstrating the causal relationship between the gender of the manager or the member of the board of directors on the corporate performance.
