University of Bahrain Jurists Discuss Perspectives of Contemporary Law in the Light of Challenges and Changes Including Robot Intellectual Rights and Judicial Review of Constitutional Amendments

In a panel discussion entitled “Perspectives of Contemporary Law in Light of Challenges and Changes”, several law professors of UoB discussed some legal and law-making issues.
A number of public and private law professors at the College of Law discussed the possibility of imposing a tax on electronic commercial transactions, the possibility of granting robots intellectual property rights, statement of the legal status of robots, judicial review of constitutional amendments, and the issue of the penalty for premeditated murder concurrent with another crime in the Bahraini legislation.
The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Salah Mohamed Ahmed, gave an introductory speech at the beginning of the session in which he spoke about the changes brought about by the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, its impacts on various sectors and activities, and its repercussions on the legal aspects, in a way that provokes development and updating of legislation, to keep pace with the legal reality and its changes. Dr. Salah also referred to the extent of opportunities that the pandemic has brought to the e-commerce and electronic trading sector.
Faculty staff of Economics and Public Finance of the Department of Public Law at the University of Bahrain, Prof Nazih Abdelmalsood Mabrouk, talked about “Imposing tax on e-commerce transactions” and challenges associated to this issue.
In turn, the head of the Public Law Department at the College of Law, Dr. Marwan Mohammad Al-Moders, discussed the problem of “Judicial review of constitutional amendments.”
The Associate Professor of Criminal Law, Department of Public Law, Adel Hamid Bashir, discussed the problems of applying Article (333) of the Bahraini Penal Code, with regard to the accompanying circumstance, in his speech entitled: “Legal Problems related to the Crime of Murder in Bahraini Legislation.”
For her part, the Head of the Private Law Department at the College of Law, Dr. Wafa Yaqoub Janahi, presented a research study on the statement of the legal status of intelligent robots. The Assistant Professor at the Private Law Department, Mohammad Mohammad Al-Qutb Mossad discussed the challenges of artificial intelligence in the field of intellectual property.
Assistant Professor of Civil Law, Dr. Hanan Al-Mawla, concluded the session with an analytical reading in light of the latest judicial rulings about defining the innovator in artificial intelligence.
The discussion was conducted by the Professor of Public Law, Dr. Mohammad Abdel Naim, and Assistant Professor of Civil Law, Dr. Jamil Bani Younes.
Attendants participated actively in the panel discussion. A number of professors and students raised questions and made interventions that enriched the content of the legal discussion.
This seminar is one of a series offered by the College to discuss and propose legal solutions to confront the challenges posed by the technical and information development, based on the College’s contribution to serving the Bahraini society.
