The Unit for Teaching Excellence and Leadership Skills Promotes the Culture of Academic Integrity

The Director of the Unit for Teaching Excellence and Leadership Skills, Dr. Diana Abdul Karim Al-Jahromi, stressed the importance of observing moral values, scientific honesty and academic integrity, as well as building the moral system in the academic community, in all formative and summative assessment tools for students, at all educational levels, especially in higher education.

The Unit for Teaching Excellence and Leadership Skills at the University of Bahrain held a workshop in Arabic entitled “Promoting the Culture of Academic Integrity in Education in Light of the Digital Transformation of the Teaching and Learning Process: The Challenge of Academic Plagiarism”, on Wednesday 18 May 2022. Members of the academic staff of the College of Health and Sport Sciences, and the College of Law participated in the workshop.

Dr. Al-Jahromi discussed the importance of academic integrity in higher education, especially in light of the Digitalization of education, and the challenges facing academic integrity with regard to assessment and providing alternatives to common assessment tools. She touched on the most important sources of academic plagiarism, and how to overcome intentional and unintentional plagiarism following an integrated approach aimed at spreading a culture of academic integrity as an integrated system.

In the same context, Dr. Al- Jahromi made an extensive presentation to the faculty members participating in the workshop on how to use SafeAssign on the Blackboard learning management platform in conjunction with the university’s policy. In addition, she explained how Turnitin program, which checks plagiarism in research, is used as a tool for obtaining similarity reports, providing rapid feedback and enhancing peer assessment.

Dr. Al- Jahromi also provided the attendees with a number of websites and software, which would help faculty members and students check similarities and academic plagiarism.

At the conclusion of the workshop, Dr. Al- Jahromi stressed on the importance of spreading awareness and promoting the culture of academic integrity at all educational levels, in formal and higher education.

Participants lauded the outcomes of the workshop and its scientific and practical content.
