UoB’s College of Science Holds an International Workshop on Computational Chemistry Software

The Department of Chemistry at the College of Science at the University of Bahrain (UoB) held the first international workshop on practical training in computer software chemistry, on Sunday, June 19, 2022. The event was held remotely and attended by more than one hundred participants from the academic staff, practical training students, and interested researchers, engineers and academics.
The head of the Department of Chemistry, Dr. Ahmed Abdulfattah Hussain, stressed the importance of the workshop dealing with computational chemistry software, which uses computer software to solve chemical problems, aiming to create effective mathematical approximations to solve theoretical chemistry problems quickly and inexpensively, in addition to developing algorithms and computer programs that calculate the properties of molecules such as total energy, vibrational frequencies, reactivity, and others.
For his part, the Dean of the College of Science, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Mustafa Al-Hilo, praised – in the opening speech – the Department of Chemistry’s keenness to hold annual events that introduce the academic and scientific circles and societies related to the uses of various programs in chemistry and other physical sciences, and he called on students with graduation projects from the Department of Chemistry to benefit from the workshop, to learn and practice using different modeling programs to solve chemical problems.
The lecturers and trainers from UoB, the University of Jordan, COMSATS University Islamabad, in Pakistan, and the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, took turns to present lectures and working papers on issues related to the workshop, reviewing the latest scientific findings on the use of computing in chemistry.
Furthermore, participants were able to learn how to identify problems using Gaussian, GaussView and Spartan algorithms, solve chemical problems, and write research proposals and articles. While experts in experimental and computational chemistry were given the opportunity to share experiences and shed light on future research directions.
