Student Noor Swaidan and student Hassan Al-Faraj, from the Department of Physics, College of Science at the University of Bahrain (UoB), started training in the summer training program at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Head of the Physics Department at the College of Science at UoB, Dr. Hanan Mubarak Buflasa, confirmed that the participation of two students from the Physics Department in the most important scientific research center in the world in the field of elementary particles; which is a unique opportunity to communicate with international research teams and participate in major scientific experiments, and comes as evidence of the Department’s interest in communicating with international research centers.
Dr. Buflasa added that this participation comes within the University’s strategy to raise the scientific level of students in various fields, with the support of the University Administration, represented by the University President, Dr. Jawaher bint Shaheen Al-Mudhahki, and the Dean of the College of Sciences, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Mustafa Al-Hilo.
The assistant professor in the Department of Physics, specializing in Elementary Particle Physics, Dr. Mohammed Yousef Hussain, coordinated the training program for the students, and encouraged and supported the students during the training period that began at the end of June 2022.
Dr. Yousef confirmed the importance of the participation of two students from the Physics Department in the summer training program at CERN, with a group of physics students from all over the world, as this participation is a unique opportunity to work and communicate with leading research teams in the world, and to participate in major scientific experiments, which helps the student gain more skills, and train on research projects in this precise and important discipline.
300 students are selected from among the thousands of students applying to the program, under the application form, letters of recommendation, and the student’s academic record. The student is subjected to an intensive scientific program for 50 days, where in the morning he attends a series of intensive lectures prepared by a group of scientists and researchers. Also, the student attends a series of specialized workshops, which qualifies him to prepare a research project under the supervision of a researcher at CERN, provided that he submits a detailed scientific report on his research project after the completion of the training.
It is worth noting that CERN is considered the largest research center in the world, with more than 16,000 scientists, researchers and doctoral students working at the Center, and more than 100 countries participating in CERN. The students of the summer program are trained on highly advanced scientific devices, to identify the basic components of matter, and to search for the secrets of the creation of the universe.
