Among The College of Information Technology Graduation Projects.. Computer Science Students at UoB Develop Smart Solutions to Emerging Challenges

The Head of the Computer Science Department at the College of Information Technology at the University of Bahrain (UoB), Dr. Ahmed Fahad, stressed the importance of graduation projects in qualifying students to enter the labor market, training on practical material, linking it to daily challenges, and finding appropriate solutions to emerging problems. As through the graduation project, students will be able to use computer software and smart algorithms to find practical solutions and useful applications, in addition to working on automating tasks without human intervention to speed up obtaining the required results and data and using them in areas of life.
The first place in the graduation projects of the second semester of the academic year 2021/2022 in the Department of Computer Science was awarded to “Maqias” project, done by students Yasmeen Omar Al-Balooshi, Reema Hesham Khairalla, Zakeya Ahmed Jaafar Al Saeed, and Amna Sameer Ahmed, under the supervision of Dr. Mustafa Mohammed Hammad, and Dr. Ebrahim Abdulrahman Janahi. While the project “Emotion Classification with Brain-Computer Interface Using Neural Networks” won second place, done by student Amat-Alaleem Abdulqawi, under the supervision of Dr Abdulla Ahmed Al-Asaadi. And the project ” Analyzing and Implementing Suitable Techniques for Story Generation Using Recurrent Neural Networks ” done by students Fatema Basel Aryan and Mohammed Jamal Al-Sayed, under the supervision of Dr. Riadh BinMohammed Ksantini and Dr. Youssef Bin Mohammed Harrath, won the third place.
Student, Reema Khairalla, explained that the “Maqias” project resulted from a cooperation between UoB, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and the Supreme Council for Environment in the Kingdom of Bahrain, to study the impact of vehicles on air quality, especially at road intersections and traffic lights, using the scale of artificial intelligence and learning algorithms, as it displays data on an easy-to-use interactive platform that provides analytical features including shorthand, comparison of information in cities and intersections, comparison of information in terms of air quality, parking time, and traffic flow at specific times selected by the user.
Regarding the “Brain-Computer Interface” (BCI) project, student Amat-Alaleem Abdulqawi said that it is a software and hardware complex (HSC) used to enable communication between computers – or other intelligent control systems – directly with the human mind. The project discussed the brain-computer interface and neural networks and studied the factors affecting the accuracy of emotion classification by neural networks. Also, it discussed simple machine learning algorithms and neural networks, and how they can be used in the emotion classification system and obtained a percentage of approximately 99% as a correct classification result.
While student Fatema Aryan indicated that the story generation project aims to analyze and apply different techniques to produce stories using artificial intelligence and artificial recurrent networks. The project consists of a structure with multiple techniques for analyzing and interpreting languages, and inserting text used for training into intelligent artificial networks. Also, the structure contains a layer of bidirectional smart cells carrying memory, and a layer of unidirectional smart cells. The project resulted in a text that contained several random texts, and others that carried meanings, and mentioned characters of a narrative nature, using smart cells, and thus a basic building block was laid for the development of stories using artificial intelligence structures.
It is worth noting that the number of computer science graduation projects for the academic year 2021/2022 reached 44 (26 projects in the first semester and 18 projects in the second semester), all of which focused on providing solutions to immediate challenges using modern programming techniques.
