An Academic at the University of Bahrain Stresses the Importance of Educating Families to Detect Autism

The faculty member in the Department of Social Sciences, College of Arts, University of Bahrain, Dr. Marwa Mohammad Al-Mulla, stressed the importance of voluntary work in the field of educating families to detect autism in children, and how to deal with a child with autism, especially that specialized centers are costly, and their number is limited compared to the numbers of children with autism.

Dr. Al-Mulla, who has recently obtained a diploma in autism from the University of Nottinghill in Britain, indicated that her interest in the category of autism sprang from the increase in people with this disorder compared to the few specialists, which requires exerting more voluntary efforts to fill the gap, whether in research or application.

Dr. Al-Mulla stated that the program offered by the University of Nottinghill in Britain aims to define autism, its types and causes, and the physical, mental, psychological, behavioral, sensory, and cognitive characteristics of people with autism.

She pointed out that the most important topics of the program include how to detect cases of autism, sorting them through diagnosis of the DSM-5, and identify recent issues and trends regarding this disorder, early intervention, and training.

It is worthy to note that Dr. Al-Mulla obtained a PhD from King Mohammed V University in the Kingdom of Morocco in 2018, for her thesis in societal transformations and education. She has published several scientific research related to topics of tolerance, counseling programs, combating violence against women, and exam anxiety. She is also an approved referee in the Journal of the Association of Arab Universities, and a member of several community and professional associations.
