The Dean of the College of Science, Prof. Mohammed Mustafa Al-Hilo, confirmed that the partnership between the College of Science and the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom contributed to the exchange of knowledge, acquisition of experiences, and completion of PhD research projects in the field of water and energy. He added that this partnership guarantees publication of some scientific research in international peer-reviewed and highly rated journals.

Prof. Al-Hilo made this statement on the participation of the faculty in the Department of Physics, researcher Basma Taqi Al-Najjar, as a speaker at the Innovative Practice Forum, organized by Bahrain Institute of Public Administration (BIPA), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Office. Al-Najjar presented a scientific paper under the theme “Research Practice through Innovative Collaboration: Research Cooperation between the University of Bahrain and the University of Oxford 2018-2022.”

Al-Najjar metioned that the partnership between the two universities contributed to the promotion of local scientific research in the field of water and energy, taking into account the environmental conditions of the region and to the development of the technology used to be more effective and sustainable.

The researcher confirmed that through the partnership, highly effective crystal nanomaterials were created, which can easily get rid of various pollutants in very salty sea water. These outcomes are considered a scientific breakthrough, as the use of nanomaterials in water purification and desalination processes contributes to raising the efficiency of the energy used and making full use of renewable energy.

Researcher Basma Al-Najjar also reviewed the most important research practice in the College of Science, including investigation of the properties of new nanomaterials that can be applied in environmental and medical applications, wastewater treatment, modification of membrane desalination, waste management, energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Al-Najjar added that the issue of water and energy is one of the biggest challenges facing the region, so it is necessary to intensify research in this field. The partnership between the two universities involves several researchers, students, and faculty members.

This study is part of the outcomes concluded by the researcher during her PhD study in the Environment and Sustainable Development Program at the College of Science, under the supervision of the Head of the Physics Department, Dr. Hanan Mubarak Al-Buflasa.
