Professors at the University of Bahrain Share a Passion for Islamic Architecture with Visitors to Al Hassan Mosque

Lecturers from the Department of Architecture and Interior Design, the College of Engineering, University of Bahrain visited the Mohammed bin Yousuf Al-Hassan Mosque, Busaiteen, Muharraq, to learn about the Islamic architecture and arts used in the Mosque.

 

In celebration of Bahrain’s National Day, four lecturers, namely Laila Kargica, Ayesha Agha Shah, Noor Saleh Al Alawi, and Nazish Abid, reviewed the Islamic architecture of the Mohammad bin Yousuf Al-Hassan Mosque as a landmark that attracts visitors.

 

Mohammad bin Yousuf Al-Hassan Mosque, which was designed by a Turkish architect, was opened in 2018. About a year ago, the mosque began to receive various visitors who learn about the features of its Islamic design.

 

The mosque consists of two prayer halls, a center for the memorization of the Holy Qur’an, two event venues, a media center, and a residence for the imam of the mosque. The main prayer hall, along with the portico area. It accommodates about 2,000 worshipers.

 

Lecturer Nour Al-Alawi stated, “We were invited to discuss and review Islamic architecture of the Mosque, in celebration of Bahrain’s National Day. We greatly enjoyed talking with visitors from all over the world who are fascinated by Islamic art, particularly architecture of mosques.”

 

Al-Alawi pointed that, “The design of the Mosque combines old and new styles of architecture, as several elements of the Mosque combine different Islamic architecture designs, such as the design of the minarets, which are inspired by Islamic architecture in the Ottoman Empire.”

 

Al-Alawi added, “It is interesting that the mosque’s mihrab was designed by an Egyptian specialist, while the mosque’s carpets and chandeliers, amounting to more than twenty, are designed and manufactured in Turkey. In addition, the mosque includes multiple domes surrounding a central dome located directly above the main prayer hall as part of the traditional Islamic decoration. The prayer hall is decorated with beautiful geometric patterns, such as Arabic calligraphy, plant motifs, wall paintings and stained glass.” She noted that all domes are built using fiberglass, which is a modern style in construction.
