The University of Bahrain Participates in the International Downstream Conference & Exhibition

The Dean of the College of Engineering, University of Bahrain, Dr. Shaikha Haifa bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, stressed that it is highly important for engineering students to develop their analytical, innovative and critical thinking skills, and to use modern technologies. She confirmed that this would enhance their opportunities in the local and global labor markets.
The Dean made this statement during a dialogue session organized by the Committee of newly Graduated Engineers, on the sidelines of the GDA International Downstream Conference & Exhibition, recently held in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Dr. Haifa bint Ibrahim gave a speech during the dialogue in a session in which the head of the Operations Team at the Kuwait National Petroleum Company, Jamila Al-Mutairi participated. Dr. Haifa reviewed her experience in studying architecture, explained the difference between the work of an engineer in the industrial sector and in the academic sector. She pointed the difficulties that women may face in the industry and engineering sectors.
Regarding the engineering programs at the University of Bahrain, the Dean indicated that the College of Engineering is constantly reviewing and updating its curricula, to keep pace with the rapid developments in engineering sciences, particularly in the oil and gas sectors. She pointed out that all the University of Bahrain programs have been recently updated and that new courses have been introduced for the first time to keep pace with the constant changes in the different industries and to meet the requirements of the labor market.
The GDA International Downstream Conference & Exhibition witnessed an active participation of the College of Engineering, University of Bahrain. Faculty member at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Dr. Hayat Abdullah Yousef, participated in the scientific committee of the conference and moderated one of the sessions. Many professors and students attended the discussion sessions, particularly professors and students of the Department of Chemical Engineering. Faculty member in the same department, Dr. Bassam Mohammed Al-Hamad, presented a scientific paper at the event, which was held at the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Center.
For his part, the head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Dr. Mohammad Ali bin Shams, indicated that, “Participation in the conference and the exhibition was very fruitful, as it allowed the exchange of experiences and the latest developments in the field of refining.” He pointed out that “The College had a pavilion in the exhibition and students of the College have participated in many activities and scientific competitions.”
The GDA International Downstream Conference & Exhibition was held under the theme “Downstream Turning Points – Capitalising on Transformation”. About 5,000 experts, specialists, academians, and technicians participated in the event to discuss current issues in the field of refining and petrochemicals.
