The University of Bahrain (UoB) is participating in the Bahrain International Garden Show, on Thursday, March 9, 2023, which is organized under the royal patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the country, and with the generous support of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of the King, Chairperson of the Advisory Board of the National Initiative for the Development of the Agricultural Sector. The exhibition will be open to the public from Thursday, March 9, until Sunday, March 12.
The UoB’s participation comes in response to the kind invitation of the National Initiative for the Development of the Agricultural Sector, due to the University’s role in serving the local community, by spreading knowledge, awareness, and education, and fulfilling its mission towards continuing education.
Under the slogan “Water: Renewal of Life”, the UoB’s participation will focus on the importance of water, and how to preserve, renew and purify it, to ensure its sustainability, as it is the backbone of life. This year, the University’s pavilion highlights the reed plant (known locally as the kasbah), due to its wide and amazing positive properties and uses. As the reed plant removes pollutants from the water, it effectively contributes to the sustainability of water, which benefits both humans and the environment.
In line with the Show’s slogan, the pavilion’s design is based on showing the extent of our connection with water, and going back to the era when water represented the heart of our social and economic life. The design team took inspiration for the pavilion from the water canals that were common in the local environment, known as Al-Saib and singularly as Saab. The shape of the pavilion embodies the alignment of horizontal lines in an undulating manner, and the design allows the visitor a space to roam in a space inspired by Al-Saib, and the beds of water bodies in the Bahraini environment. The design also provides corners that allow visitors to learn about the common reed plant, by presenting distinctive scientific experiments.
An integrated team from the various colleges and departments of the University worked under the direct guidance of the University President, Dr. Jawaher bint Shaheen Al-Mudhahka, to make the participation of UoB distinctive, through a design consistent with the exhibition’s logo, attracts the public, and has a meaningful scientific content, to enrich visitors with scientific knowledge in the field of water sustainability, and ways to use the environment to renew life.
It is worth noting that the National University won the award for the best participating pavilion in the category of educational institutions at the Bahrain International Garden Show for the years 2019 and 2018, and the award for embodying the slogan of the Show for the year 2017 “Miniature Gardens”. The university pavilion also won first place in the awareness category in 2016, as UoB has continuously won first prizes since its multiple participations from 2004.
UoB invites the public to visit its pavilion to enjoy the design and scientific content, and it extends its thanks and appreciation to Her Excellency Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, Secretary-General of the National Initiative for the Development of the Agricultural Sector, for her generous cooperation and constant interest in UoB’s previous and current participation in the Bahrain International Garden Show.
