On Tuesday, March 14, 2023, the Department of Mathematics, College of Science, University of Bahrain organized the “Mathematics for All” event on the International Day of Mathematics, which falls on March 14, in the presence of the Dean of the College of Science, Prof. Mohammad Mustafa Al-Hilo, and some of the academic staff and students.
The event was inaugurated with a speech by the Head of the Department of Mathematics, Dr. Abdullah Jaafar Eid, followed by five lectures by some professors of the department, and some interactive activities and competitions.
Under the theme “Mistery of Prime Numbers: Structure and Randomness,” Prof. Sami Ammar reviewed the most prominent achievements made by mathematicians in the past decade towards understanding the structure and randomness in the prime numbers.
Assistant Professor at the Department of Mathematics, Dr. Ahmed Ali Matar, gave a speech on “How Sam Loyd fooled America”, in which he explained mathematically why the famous Sam Loyd’s unsolvable 15 puzzle is considered an impossible challenge.
For his part, Dr. Oliver Thomas, gave a speech titled, “When a 19-Year-Old Made Mathematical History”, in which he reviewed the solution to the problem of geometric shapes that can be made using the line and the circle, and Gauss’s number theory in 1796.
Dr. Abdullah Jaafar Eid presented examples of a problem that can be solved (P) vs. (NP), a major unsolved problem in theoretical computer science, and questioned the possibility of solving each problem, and verifying its results in the shortest time.
For her part, Dr. Mayadah Khalil Shehadeh reviewed the life story of Leonard Euler, his main contributions to mathematics, and the solution to the first problem in graph theory, “The Seven Bridges of Konigsberg”.
