A delegation from the British Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) and BIBF Visits the University of Bahrain

A delegation from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) and the Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance in Bahrain (BIBF), recently visited the College of Science at the University of Bahrain, to open channels of collaboration and partnership, to promote the Bachelor of Actuarial Science program in the Department of Mathematics in the College, and to grant the program international accreditation.

During the visit, the Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance reviewed the latest developments in the national initiative to qualify and employ Bahraini actuarial experts in insurance companies by June 2023. A team from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries reviewed the Institute’s role in promoting actuarial science, through granting accreditations to universities that offer actuarial science programs, so that graduates of the program can obtain some exemptions from taking exams of professional certificates, which will be offered in the future through collaboration between Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance and the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.

The Dean of the College of Science, Prof. Mohammad Mustafa Al-Helou, mentioned that the College of Science at the University of Bahrain continues to offer academic programs that keep pace with the requirements of the labor market, pointing out that one of these programs is the actuarial science program aimed to provide the labor market with qualified actuarial experts. He emphasized the Bahrain Institute for Banking and Finance’s important role in supporting the program in the future, through linking the program’s outputs to the labor market in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

For his part, the Head of the Mathematics Department at the College of Science, University of Bahrain, Dr. Abdullah Jaafar Eid, confirmed the department’s readiness to apply for the accreditation of the Bachelor of Actuarial Science program. He reviewed the courses offered in the department and the extent to which they qualify students to pass the professional certification exams of IFOA.

It is worth mentioning that the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries was established in 2010, after the merger of the Institute of Actuaries in England and the Faculty of Actuaries in Scotland.

The Faculty of Science was represented by Director of the Quality Assurance Center at the College of Science, Dr. Jawad Mohammad Al-Saei, and members of the Actuarial Science Program Committee in the Mathematics Department, namely the Head of the Mathematics Department and Coordinator of the Actuarial Science Program, Dr. Babkar Sik, Assistant Professor in the Mathematics Department, Dr. Ahmed Ali Matar, and research and teaching assistant in the Department of Mathematics, Aseel Masoud Al-Harmi.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries was represented by President-Elect Kalpana Shah, President of Business Development for the Middle East Irene Redman, and Toby Moseley.

The Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance was represented by the head of the Centre for Insurance, Manal Muhammad Mashkoor.
