A medical study at the University of Bahrain (UoB) concluded that the decrease in amino acid levels may be linked to thyroid disorders in diabetic patients.
The study, with which Dr. Rabab Abdulwahab, Head of Integrated Sciences Department of the College of Health Sciences and Sports (CHSS) at UoB participated in the Fifth Conference on Internal Medicine, Diabetes and Obesity (IMDO), which was held from 17 to 19 February 2022, suggested using these results to determine the quality of treatment for diabetes patients, or using amino acids as nutritional supplements to improve disease management and prevent future complications.
Dr. Abdulwahab stated: “The study measured the plasma level of thirteen amino acids in Bahrainis with diabetes, using a highly efficient RP-HPLC chromatograph, in addition to measuring blood sugar and lipids”. Also, she explained that the results were analyzed using several statistical models to test 21 variables, including amino acids, to identify variables associated with diabetes.
The results showed a significant decrease in the plasma level of phenylalanine in patients, compared to the control group, and a significant decrease in the levels of four nonessential amino acids: glycine, glutamine, aspartic acid, and tyrosine.
It is worth noting that the chromatograph is used in many fields, including: biotechnology, pharmaceutical analysis, food analysis, pesticide residue analysis, antibiotic residue, and environmental organic pollutant residues, as well as chemistry, cosmetics, and in energy and the environment.
