A Thesis at UoB Calls for Requiring Future Spouses to Have Marital Counseling

A scientific study at the University of Bahrain (UoB) called for the necessity of having a marital counseling service provided by the Department of Social Services in Primary Health as part of the mandatory medical examination for future spouses, and to develop effective and appealing content for the marital counseling session.

The thesis was submitted by the student in the Master’s Program in Family Counseling Aisha Abdulrahman Al-Nuaimi, which stressed the need for training institutions concerned with providing specialized training for family counselors, based on correct and systematic scientific foundations, and the expansion of continuing education programs associated with UoB to include specialized educational courses related to family and marital counseling and its various applications.

The thesis was recently discussed by an examination committee, and it was titled “The Effectiveness of a Training Program to Meet the Training Needs of Social Researchers Associated with Providing Marriage Counseling Service”.

As the researcher, Al-Nuaimi explained that the study aimed to verify the effect of a training program in satisfying the training needs of social researchers who provide marital counseling.

The researcher used the one-group pre-experimental method, as the study sample included 14 social researchers working in the Department of Social Services in Primary Health, who underwent a training program built to achieve the objectives of the study. The training program included 13 training sessions, with two to three training sessions per day, each session ranging between 45 minutes and two hours, and was implemented within five days.

The application of the training program prepared to satisfy the needs of social researchers who provide marital counseling services shown on the study sample that they had multiple training needs.

Also, it proved the effectiveness of the training program in satisfying the training needs of social researchers who provide marital counseling services.

Moreover, the thesis recommended granting licenses to practice the profession of family counseling to limit the practice of this profession to specialists in psychological counseling, psychology, social work, and sociology, with the importance of establishing levels of licenses related to the academic qualification obtained by the family counselor.

Also, it considered the importance of exchanging experiences and studies related to providing marital counseling services to future spouses between the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Arab countries that have experience in rehabilitating future spouses to develop the counseling services provided to this category.

The researcher discussed her thesis with an examination committee consisting of a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at the College of Arts at UoB Prof. Dr. Mohammed Miqdad as a supervisor, faculty member in the same department Prof. Dr. Jihan Ahmed Al-Omran as an internal examiner, and faculty member at Prince Nayef College for Security Sciences in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Prof. Dr. Abdulhafeed Muqaddam as an external examiner.

Moreover, the head of the Department of Psychology at the University, Dr. Shaikha Ahmed Al-Junaid, praised the topic of the thesis, especially given how many marriage counseling service providers do not have the required qualification in the field of marriage counseling.

Pointing out that social researchers receiving training in the field of marital counseling helps them improve their performance in providing marital counseling.
