A scientific study at the University of Bahrain (UoB) has developed a scale of grief in relation to spontaneous abortion, and a proposed treatment program that has been experimentally proven to be effective.
The study, entitled: “The Effectiveness of Therapeutic Interventions for Grief in a Sample of Women Exposed to Spontaneous Abortion in the Kingdom of Bahrain”, was prepared by Wala’a Abdulelah Al-Sayegh, a student in the Master’s Program in Family Counseling.
The study aimed to identify the level of grief of Bahraini women subjected to spontaneous abortion, to identify the symptoms of their grief, and to design an effective counseling program, based on the techniques of cognitive-behavioral counseling, to make change on their level of grief.
According to the researcher Al-Sayegh, the importance of her study lies in shedding light on Bahraini women subjected to spontaneous abortion, in an attempt to alleviate the symptoms of grief that prevent them from performing their family, occupational, and societal functions, noting that performance in its various dimensions requires sound physical and psychological health, to be actively carried out.
It is worth noting that the researcher applied her study to ten Bahraini women who experienced spontaneous abortion in the Kingdom of Bahrain, following the quasi-experimental approach, with one group, conducting the measurement process before and after the experiment, and monitoring it.
The study showed a high level of grief in this group before the application of the treatment program, which required rapid intervention. According to the results, the effectiveness of the treatment program in reducing the level of grief among Bahraini women subjected to spontaneous abortion was found according to the scientific scale and method, compared to the pre and post results. In addition, the effectiveness of the program continued, and decreased in only one dimension, which is anxiety.
An examination committee discussed the researcher Al-Sayegh in her thesis, and the committee consisted of: Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology, Dr. Mohammed Hassan Al-Mutawa as a supervisor, Associate Professor in the same department, Dr. Amani Abdulrahman Al-Shirawi, as an internal examiner, and Professor of Psychology at Alexandria University in the Arab Republic of Egypt, Dr. Ashraf Abdel-Ghani Shareet, as an external examiner.
