Department of English Language and Literature at UOB organized a Workshop for Students on the Power of Speech

The department of English Language and Literature at the University of Bahrain organized a public speaking workshop titled “The power of Speech” with the guest speaker Ms. Ruqaya Aamer, on Tuesday (22 November 2022), for the English department students.
The two-hour workshop focused on key strategies for effective spontaneous prepared communication, exploring various speaking structures as well as vocal and physical presence.
Ms. Ruqaya Aamer mentioned that to deliver a speech with confidence one needs to manage their anxiety by having knowledge of the topic, delivering it with in a structure, through a story for example, with a beginning, middle and end. Adding that using the fundamentals of speaking; logic, emotion, and credibility, helps connect with the audience.
The audience participated in several activities that support command of the voice and body language by controlling breathing, focusing on the message, sharing, and connecting with the audience through eye contact and feedback.
Several English language students enrolled in the public speaking course – a new course offered at the department according to the improved BA study plan) gave short paragraphs that included recitation of the Holy Quran and sharing short stories.
Head of Department of English Language and Literatures Dr. Ghada Ahmed Jassim, and faculty members at the department, and around 80 students attended the workshop.
It is worth noting that Ms. Ruqaya Aamer has 16 years of experience in Teaching English and Drama to young students and adults, she also has extensive experience in training, designing, and facilitating workshops for professional development in communication and education. She Co-Founded and Managed Makan School of Speech and Drama since 2011 and has extensive experience teaching LAMDA and running LAMDA Exams in Bahrain.
