The President of the University of Bahrain (UoB), Dr. Fuad Mohammed Al-Ansari, praised the findings of a study by a team at the College of Information Technology that employed artificial intelligence (AI) to reduce the number of buses in the streets and roads of large residential neighborhoods.

The study was conducted by a team from the Department of Computer Science at the College of Information Technology at the University, which recommended adopting flexibility in dealing with the buses working lanes in the streets and roads in some large neighborhoods or smart cities, confirming the possibility of reducing the number of buses currently in use by half using optimization algorithms.

The University President recently received the research team at the University’s headquarters in Sakhir, who reviewed the project’s findings on the optimization of transportation in certain streets and roads in large residential neighborhoods. As the President praised the research effort exerted in completing the study, encouraging students and researching professors to expand the use of AI, to find innovative solutions to facilitate services, and to make use of the available modern technologies and resources.

During the meeting, the research team reviewed the current state of transportation in the Kingdom, and the proposed mechanism for developing the service using optimization algorithms, to reduce traffic congestion, and thus reduce traffic accident rates, as well as gases and carbon emissions, in order to preserve the environment.

It is worth noting the students came up with the project idea after reviewing projects at the exhibition of graduating students’ projects at the College of Information Technology at the university, which were touching on real problems in the Kingdom.

In addition to the University President, the meeting was attended by the Vice President for Information Technology Services, Administrative and Financial Affairs, and Information Technology, Dr. Osama Abdullah Al-Jowder, the research team at the College of Information Technology headed by Assistant Professor Dr. Youssef Mohammed Harath, Assistant Professor Dr. Abdullah Ahmed Al-Asadi, Assistant Professor Dr. Abdullah Mohammed Al-Qaddoumi, in addition to the students: Jood Yasser Al-Youssef, Mona Issa Al-Dossary, and Zina Ghulam Haider.
