In collaboration with the University of Bahrain, the Bahrain Institute for Political Development, held an awareness seminar for university students about the parliamentary and municipal elections, on Thursday (October 27, 2022), on the occasion of the upcoming elections of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The seminar aimed to educate students and raise their awareness about the importance of participating in the upcoming parliamentary and municipal elections. It also touched on many important points in this aspect.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Fatima Mohammad Al-Malki, stressed that the importance of this awareness seminar for youth lies in encouraging university students to participate in decision-making, engage in the work of the local community, and to educate them about their rights and duties, including choosing the appropriate candidate that can represent them in the parliament and assuming the responsibility of making a choice based on logic, and getting information from its main sources.
The symposium entitled “Your Vote is a Responsibility” hosted a member of the Legislation and Legal Opinion Commission, Assistant Counselor Salman Mohammad Al Mahmoud, to review the legal and political aspects. It also hosted Ashwaq Ahmed Buali, leadership, motivation and capacity building consultant, to talk about the social and motivational aspects.
Al Mahmoud reviewed the four phases of the electoral process, the conditions for exercising the right to vote inside and outside the Kingdom, the voting requirements, and the rights of both the voter and the candidate. He also gave some tips and directions on avoiding voting problems, and the types of violations that may occur during the elections, including electoral propaganda violations and those related to the conduct of the polling process.
Buali talked about the role of youth in the electoral process, with about fifty thousand young people in the Kingdom becoming eligible to vote for the first time in the current elections. Selecting the qualified candidate. She reviewed some motives for youth participation and voting in the electoral process, to contribute to the development and renaissance of their homeland. In addition, she touched on the criteria for selecting qualified candidates.
She also pointed out the importance of the participation of Bahraini youth, particularly university students, as they represent a large segment of the community. Therefore, it is necessary to educate them about the electoral process to be able to exercise their right to vote, to contribute to the national renaissance and Bahrain’s Vision 2030.
For her part, Head of the Public Relations Department at the Bahrain Institute for Political Development, Latifa Ahmed Al-Murshed, briefed the participants about the Institute, pointing out that it aims to spread political awareness in the community and consolidate the principles of democracy in the Kingdom of Bahrain, under the slogan of a political development with a national vision.
