Information Technology Students at UoB Develop Smart Service Applications

The College of Information Technology at the University of Bahrain (UoB) presented 50 senior projects in the disciplines of computer science, computer engineering, and information systems, featuring the provision of artificial intelligence services, through the design or development of smart phone applications that can be made available to users of Apple and Android systems.

Dean of the College of Information Technology, Dr. Lamia Mohammed Al-Jasmi, stated that “The senior projects offered by the College departments reflect the students’ interests and their diverse passions, and prove their abilities in finding innovative solutions by employing the latest technologies for real-world topics and problems.” Pointing out that 119 students submitted these projects.

Furthermore, Dr. Al-Jasmi explained that these projects researched modern technical trends and fields such as: artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing, FinTech, augmented virtual reality, mobile and web development, image processing, in addition to online learning, pointing out that this diversity in projects is in line with the different demands of the labor market.

The Dean of the College of Information Technology further stated that “The students accomplished these projects through teamwork, commitment, dedication, and time management.” She added, “The skills practiced by the students are necessary for the work environment and for real-life applications, and these innovations and developments qualify students to becoming entrepreneurs in the future.”.

Dr. Al-Jasmi confirmed that the College of Information Technology seeks to create the best outputs, and to provide the labor market with innovative graduates who are able to meet the challenges of the future and contribute to the economic progress and service development in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

For her part, the head of the organizing committee of the Senior Projects Exhibition, Dr. Amal Mohammed Al-Rayes, said: “The senior projects ceremony contributes to highlighting the achievements of our students,” considering that it is time for them to be productive elements in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and explaining that the senior project is an essential pillar of studying at the College of Information Technology.

In this context, the two students from the Information Systems Department, Dina Mohammed Saada and Hussain Abdulali Abdulhassan, presented a smart application that records the attendance of students in the classrooms and is characterized by the ability to recognize faces. This project aims to facilitate the process of registering students’ attendance at UoB and making it more efficient and less time consuming.

While the two students from the Information Systems Department, Amna Khalid Al-Mannai and Ahmed Saeed Asadallah, developed the application of a charitable platform called (Aoun). The idea of the project is to develop a platform that includes all charities in the Kingdom of Bahrain in one application. This electronic platform shall help the needy and benefactors in communicating with charities, in order to obtain aid, or to donate and contribute to financial or in-kind assistance.

Also, the students in the Information Systems Department, Aisha Aref, Jihan Malik, and Manal Hussain, developed an application that works on planning moveable events in Bahrain, and aims to organize special events for each individual such as: birthdays and parties, in order to save time, reduce costs, and create lists of proposed clients and suppliers, in addition to activating automatic payment.

The students, Shahla Sayed Hashem Al-Hashemi and Zainab Hassan Shehab, from the Department of Computer Engineering, presented a smart application that carries out the task of detecting violators of those not wearing masks and those who do not adhere to the social distance during the period of preventive precautions through a camera. Also, the system used in the application supports the notification feature and helps in apprehending violators by taking a picture of them.

For their part, the students from the Department of Computer Engineering, Maysa Issa Abdullah and Aisha Mahmood Hashem, presented a research on the possibility of designing a smart system that classifies waste according to its type, whether it is plastic, paper, metal, glass, or garbage, to be separate recyclable waste from other waste afterwards.

Also, the students from the Department of Computer Science, Farhan Ahmed, Bilal Shaber, and Najem Munawer, discussed the possibility of designing smart glasses to facilitate daily life. The smart glasses enable controlling the gesture and body movements, in addition to the feature of measuring temperature in nearby objects, with a voice assistant.

In addition, the students from the Department of Computer Science, Saif Saleh Mohammad, Qassim Abdelhamid Al-Sufi, and Gibran Hussain Gibran, suggested using the sensors of smart phones to detect whether the car is traveling on smooth or bumpy road. This application uses machine learning to study the patterns of sensor readings collected from different cars, drivers, speeds and surfaces, using an application that records sensor readings while driving

While the two students, Somaiya Jassim Debwan and Shahd Abdulhadi Al-Enezi, developed a smart application that provides home repair services, and aims to meet the needs of home service providers, in addition to customers. The application provides the feature of booking appointments by customers, and communicating with service providers, in addition to the ability to add a comment and an evaluation of service providers, as these ratings and comments can be seen in the application by all users.

It is noteworthy that the senior project is part of the credit hours for graduation in the College of Information Technology. As the College holds an exhibition that includes senior projects at the end of each semester, and these projects receive attention and interaction from various professional sectors in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
